December 2015
Greetings!

Welcome to the December edition of Grace After Fire's newsletter.  As an organization we are committed to keeping you up-to-date and informed about what we are planning for the future. Our mission of Grace After Fire is to provide the means for women Veterans to gain knowledge, insight and self-renewal. We are dedicated to helping women Veterans help themselves.
A WORD FROM THE CEO:
As 2015 winds down and we approach one of the "most wonderful times of the year"; I want to share with you one golden nugget I had the pleasure of capturing over the last year and even more recently, over the past couple of weeks. While attending a conference in Kansas City, MO listening to a few Veterans courageously read aloud material they had written that shinned a little light on some of their personal story to an audience they did not know, this one voice stuck out to me. I began to listen attentively when a Marine Veteran began to say these words, "A story is made up of choices; you choose the beginning and end of the story and you choose what "truth" you add in or leave out; the details are all up to you". He then posed this question, "So if the person telling the story chooses what goes into the story and chooses what is left out, then how do you know as the listener if the story is true and if it is true then what may be missing from the truth"? He later said, "More details of the story are given when the person telling story is willing to face the truth of what is being exposed to the audience". That Marine made a good point, a point that I think about even now. What I learned that day while sitting in that meeting room filled with roughly fifty people of Veterans, active duty members and community leaders is this--every person we come in contact with has a story and it's up to that person to let you into the deeper inner parts of their being. Once a person faces and accepts their own truth that is when and only when they are ready to share that truth with other people; like you and me. Once that manifestation takes place, we then get a glimpse of who that person truly is-their story. I will leave you with this, when we allow ourselves to own our truth, accept our truth and strive to be our very best in our truth; we unconsciously allow others to do the same.

For as many snowflakes fall; may you and your family be tremendously blessed this Holiday Season!

Happy Holidays!

A WORD FROM THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR:
I remember as a child, I would lay on the grass look up at the sky. I would think of how birds could fly so high, how the clouds looked like animals, and the grass was so green. It's hard to keep a lush yard in the Texas heat. I saw my father water our patch of grass every morning, he would pull the weeds and kept it trimmed. I saw airplanes flying, wondering where they were going. As I look back, I realize it was what kept me going. I want to see the world, see where those airplanes were going. I wanted to fly with birds, touch the fluffy clouds and land on spongy, green grass. What childhood memory keeps you going? The sky is no longer the limit, break through the barriers, break through the negative thoughts, pass the clouds and soar with the birds. You may not be where you think you should be, with a little water and a little work...beautiful things can happen...like a green patch of grass. Time stops for no one, if you are hesitating on take a new job, a leap into something unknown... do it. Your time is now, fly with the birds.
