Learn CPR in 10 Minutes

Next week, we'll be hosting a Take 10 CPR class taught by Westlake High School Health Occupations Students of America.  You'll learn compression-only CPR in, yes, 10 minutes!

This class can literally be a life-saver, & while it's hard to put a price tag on such an important skill, don't forget that teens who babysit or do other similar jobs have a competitive edge when they know how to do CPR.

Thursday, April 15th at Westbank 4-5:30pm with classes starting every 15 minutes

Take 10 minutes & learn to save a life!  For ages 10 & up.

Q&A with a former friend of a serial-killer

Most adults are familiar with the name Jeffrey Dahmer, but many teens may not be.  On Wednesday, August 21st, 6:30pm at Westbank, we'll host a Skype Q&A with critically-acclaimed author Derf Backderf who is a talented writer & artist in his own right, & as fates would have it has a chilling yet absorbing story to tell about his former friend & classmate - the notorious Jeffrey Dahmer.

Derf's non-fiction graphic novel My Friend Dahmer won the 2012 Alex Award by the Young Adult Library Association, which is an award given to books written for adults but with teen appeal.  Think of this book as an origin story - all of the morbidity & foreboding, none of the gore or violence.

This program is for both teens & adults.

College Planning Programs

We have two college planning programs coming up.

A representative from App Educational Consulting will be stopping by Laura's Library this Saturday, August 10th at 1:30pm to discuss how to find colleges that are a great fit for students with different needs in the classroom.  This organization specializes in working with LD/ADHD students.

We're also hosting a College Planning Seminar by College In Roads. Pop in for some college planning tips at Laura's Library on Wednesday, August 14th at 6pm. Hear all about the in's & out's of getting into college with all of the following discussed:

  • What colleges are looking for
  • Financial aid & scholarships
  • How to beat today's college costs
  • 3 simple rules to follow to minimize stress for you & your whole family

Parents & teens are both welcome at both programs!

Need a good book but can't come to the library?

We know our Westbank teens are very busy people between school (yep, it's just around the corner), studying, extracurriculars, &, you know, like trying to have a social life, but we know you sometimes still want a great book to read.  So send mom or dad to the library for you!  What kind of information should you give your parents when they go to the library?
  • Tell your parents about a couple of books you really like.  Parents - listen for what your teen shares about the book.  Did you hear all about the characters?  The setting?  The action?  How they felt when they read it?
  • Think of three adjectives that describe the kind of book you're in the mood for.
  • If you're drawing a blank on what sounds good, think about what kinds of movies & TV shows you enjoy.  You may like a book with a similar feel.
If you're able to share any of this information with a librarian, we may be able to find you a book you haven't considered reading before but may really enjoy.
