A counter-intuitive Christmas

       We've had lots of calls from people who read the recent Greenville News series on homelessness. It was the most comprehensive look I've seen on the local situation. The reporter and photographer did a fine job.
         Unfortunately, people have rushed food and water, sleeping bags and blankets, firewood and coats to the community living under the Pete Hollis Corridor bridge.     
        We started out that way at Triune, too, until we realized that our goal wasn't to make people comfortable in their homelessness. Our goal was to get people out of it.
         That's why we use our money on mental health counselors, social workers, rehab and job counselors. That's why we invite lawyers and an ophthalmologist, a community nurse and a Benefit Bank rep, artists and actors and gardeners into our space.  That's why we encourage homeless people to serve -- just like every other Christian.
        When you purchase a Triune Honor Card, you are supporting these efforts. The card was painted by Charles Graham in our art room. It shows a homeless man sleeping beside a dumpster with his dog. 
      "I am with thee always," Charles wrote above the scene. 
        Charles' card is available for the holiday season for a minimum $10 donation.

        You may purchase the cards by coming to Triune's reception area or by sending in the order form below. Then you mail the cards. 
         If you want us to address, stamp and send them, enclose your mailing list as well as the signature you want on the card and an extra $1 per card, please.
      Your gift to Triune will help us reach homeless people with an incredible opportunity this season -- the opportunity to emerge from homelessness.

December 8, 11 AM -- Chris Rose will sing the part of Jesus, and Daniel Marlatt, the part of John the Baptist, as we offer two songs from Godspell. The chorus will be Taylor Randall, Julio Ruiz, Jon Kilpatrick and Carla Rosa. Plus, the Voices of Mercy will perform "Emmanuel" by Michael W. Smith, and Deb will  preach on "Authentically John, Authentically Us."  

6 PM -- Perry White will speak. 

  

December 15, 11 AM -- Jacob Johnson will perform songs from his latest Christmas release, and the Voices of Mercy will perform sacred Christmas music. Deb will preach on "In prison."  

6 PM --  Rev. Jerry Hill will speak.

 

December 22, 11 AM --The Triune Gospel Band will lead our Christmas service, and Deb will preach from Luke's infancy narrative.   

4:30 PM -- Disciples UMC will carol before our 5 PM meal.
6 PM -- Playback Cafe, our improvisational acting ministry that shares the stories of homeless parishioners, will perform as our evening service.   

December 24, 5 PM -- Kathy Sharp will lead our traditional Christmas Eve service of readings and carols. 

  

December 29, 10 AM --  Church-wide coffee in the dining hall. Come meet your fellow worshipers!

11 AM -- TBA.       

6 PM -- Rev. Jerry Hill will speak.
