Homeless for the holidays
Triune Mercy Center / October 2013
From the pastor:

The holidays are coming, and for many people, that's the giving season.
As you may know, we study the books "When Helping Hurts" and "Toxic Charity" at Triune. We firmly believe in Robert Lupton's Oath for Compassionate Service: "Never do for the poor what they have (or could have) the capacity to do for themselves."  When we do, we undermine dignity, foster dependency and create a sense of entitlement.
Furthermore, we have no desire to make people comfortable in their homelessness. Instead, we want them to leave homelessness behind.
So we won't be asking you to adopt a family or provide toys or serve Christmas dinner.
Instead, we request that your family or Sunday school class help us by collecting the items that will carry us through the holidays and through the ensuing winter as we work to offer people a way out of crisis. If your group could collect canned goods or blankets or warm coats, we will make sure those items get to Greenville's neediest citizens. Simultaneously, we will offer opportunities for drug rehab, mental health counseling, medical care, legal aid, employment and Christian friendship in an attempt to provide folks a hand up.
And as always, feel free to come and spend time with us!

If you have been seeking a volunteer opportunity at Triune, we have a new option: Meals for 35 to 45 on Mondays.
Our Support Circles training has begun, and our Support Circle volunteers and the circle leaders who want to emerge from poverty eat together each Monday at 5:30 PM.
If you would like to provide a simple meal, please call volunteer coordinator Kathy Sharp at 233-8020, ext. 200, or email her at kathy@triunemercy.org.

Blessings,

Deb Richardson-Moore
