Re-connections
Triune Mercy Center / July 2013

From the pastor:
One of the pleasures of living in a city the size of Greenville is the constancy of relationships.
During my time as a member of First Baptist Church of Taylors, I was in a Sunday school class with Suzanne and Sam Barton. They had four children, and adopted a fifth, a baby they named Bethany. Two years later, they left to become missionaries in Africa, first in Angola, then in Benin, where Sam worked as a doctor.
I left Taylors during my seminary years, and lost touch with the Bartons.
In June, the youth choir from First Baptist Taylors came to sing during an evening service at Triune. Under the direction of Diann Greer and Kevin Batson, the young singers put on an incredible concert. The showstopper was a Jamaican song, called "Shut De
Do'. " The soloist's voice was so sweet and clear that I sat up in my pew to get a better look. She was pretty, maybe 16, her long black hair held loosely in a ponytail draped over one shoulder. "Wow!" I remember thinking. "Where did they find her?"
Precisely three days later, my old friends Sam and Suzanne came to visit Triune for the first time, looking for a volunteer opportunity. When I took them into the sanctuary, Suzanne said, "Oh, yes, Bethany sang here with the youth choir on Sunday."
"What did she sing?" I asked. "Shut De Do','' said her mom.
"That was Bethany?" I asked incredulously, recalling the 2-week-old baby they'd brought home. Then immediately, of course, "Can she come back?"
The Triune choir is now trying to learn the song for our August 25 morning worship, which will feature Bethany as soloist. More importantly, my old friends are in and out of the building, bringing their huge hearts for the gospel into the Triune family.
I'm grateful to live in a place where that kind of re-connection is possible.

If you haven't quite filled that beach bag with enough books to get you through vacation season, be sure to come to Fiction Addiction's "Love Your Indie Author" In-Store Celebration Saturday, July 6, 10 AM to 6 PM.
Owner Jill Hendrix says that four of her independent bookstore's 2012 bestsellers were small press titles -- including "The Weight of Mercy," the memoir of my first three years at Triune. Published by Lion Hudson in Oxford, England, it tells how I came to Triune from a career in journalism and was confronted by a world I could scarcely imagine.
I will be signing books 11 AM to noon at Fiction Addiction, which is located in the strip mall beside Haywood Mall, on the Dillards side.

We will launch our summer visual arts project -- a dining hall mural -- on July 7. The idea is to create a three-dimensional garden-themed mural through paint and a collage of poetry, songs, testimonies, textiles, etc.
As we build up layers of color, textures, and images, our lives will merge into a brilliant display of hope for all to see. The Triune family will be at work on Sunday afternoons 1:30-3:30 PM. Be sure to look for it next time you visit.
Blessings,
Deb Richardson-Moore
