Jim's Article -  Pastoral Care

Pastoral Care--it's not about how much you care for your pastor.
Presbyterians strongly believe in the priesthood of all believers.  We are called to care for one another, to pray for one another, to come alongside one another in good times and bad times.  Not only is Pastoral care not about how much you care for your pastor, it's not something only pastors do.

Pastoral Caregiving

Steven Spidell, D.Min., B.C.C., Director, Spiritual Care and Values Integration of Houston Methodist San Jacinto Hospital, Baytown, will present Pastoral Caregiving-- Beyond the Traumatic Experience: Innovative Practices to Support Recovery.

Spiritual care providers are often the first persons notified when there is a serious or life threatening event in someone's life. Such events are often the cause of a traumatic reaction. Trauma is a person's physical, emotional, and spiritual response to a perceived threat. Being knowledgeable about what we can offer at such times is essential for informed caregiving.

This workshop will address the nature of trauma, reactions, and appropriate interventions.

September 11 Anniversary Prayer

I'm sure you've seen your share of memories of what happened on September 11th, 15 years ago.  I'm attaching a prayer that Jill Duffield wrote in honor of the 15th anniversary of that dark day in our history.   I had planned to include it in my pastoral prayer last Sunday, but with all the wonderful testimonies from the members who shared what being a part of a Sunday Morning small group I decided to send it to you instead. Church Work Day
gardening-things.jpg

We are going to have a work day Saturday the 24th.  The A/C system is due maintenance. The hedges in the front need trimming. The flower bed in front needs weeding and trimming The shrubs along the front of the building need trimming and weeding. The front portico needs power washing. We need everyone that can to pitch in and get this maintenance completed.
Choir News

We are working on the Cantata and other music as well. We will welcome those who can attend the first 30 minutes for the Cantata. I have 4 copies of the Cantata left and a CD fo r each person to listen/study. It's a great work, somewhat light in nature, but a lot of fun for both choir and congregation. We will need at leat one narrator, better two narrators on each of the 4 separate performances starting on Sunday Morning,  Nov. 27th. Other performance times are Sunday mornings of Dec. 4, 11 & 18. We will use something from the Cantata as a reprise on Christmas eve and perhaps Christmas  Sunday morning.

Interested parties contact Dave Corder at 281.202.8722 or ddcord1@gmail.com
"ssshhh_________Auction"

I want to thank everyone that donated items for the "sshh  _____" auction.  I want to thank those that bid and won the items on display.  At last count we gathered over $1700 for our Christian Education Program and the Diana Gray Child Care Center.
Ping Pong Anyone? September 25th

Mike Wilson issued a challenge to the Christian Education Committee to help hold a
Ping Pong Tournament. The Committee has taken up the challenge and would like to see how much interest there is in holding one on Sunday afternoon, September 25. We think it would be a great Fellowship Activity for all ages and could possibly be one that might draw people from our Community to come and visit our church. We will advertise it along with our Silent Auction for our Rally Day on September 11th. It will be my last day before my Knee Replacement surgery, so if I blow out my knee in the tournament I can get a new one the next day. If you are interested tell me or Mike Wilson or email me at
jimgill@baytownpres.org. We have a Ping Pong Table in our youth room if you want to find a partner and start practicing now.
