The Heartbeat
Brady/ McCulloch County Chamber of Commerce

Greetings!

It seems impossible, but we are nearly in the third month of 2013 already. We are coming off of a very successful Annual Chamber Banquet in January that honored some very deserving award recipients. See the below story for more information on that.

The next few months will bring some exciting events. March will bring the Four Nines Golf Tournament, with proceeds going to Project Graduation. Also in March, flocks of traditional country music fans will visit Brady for the 24th Anniversary Celebration put on by the Heart of Texas Country Music Association. The Chamber's Annual Duffers Golf Tournament will be held on May 4th. Please remember that if you have any events that you would like added to our calendar, just let us know! We'd love to promote your event.

If you are a registered voter in the City of Brady, there may be a few items on the ballot in the upcoming election that could impact the business community in Brady. EDC will be hosting EDC Days at the Chamber of Commerce office to answer any questions you might have about the group. We encourage you to be informed and recognize the importance of your vote!

Our member visits are going extremely well and we are getting fantastic feedback from the members we have met with already. Hopefully we will be seeing you soon!

Annual Banquet Recap

The Annual Chamber Banquet on January 31st saw a large crowd of Chamber Members come together to celebrate the successes of Brady/ McCulloch County over the last year. Decorated with a vintage circus theme, the brief program saw many deserving award winners named complete with a few special surprises.

Here is a list of award winners with a summary of their accomplishments from their nominations:
  • Lifetime Achievement: Kenneth Young: consistent commitment to community service, successful businessman, 2nd of four generations in Brady
  • Citizens of the Year: Paden & McKenna Behrens-K-Life Directors : work with local youth, Haven Family Shelter board member
  • Small Business of the Year: West Central Wireless: great service, community support
  • Large Business of the Year: Ed Davenport Trucking: recent increase in employees (40%) and fleet (60%), community support
  • Volunteer of the Year (3): Mary Bradshaw; Carol Henderson; Mary King: volunteer ambassadors for the Chamber of Commerce
  • President's Award for Service: Brian King: continued support of Chamber events, namely cooking a meal for the teams at the annual Duffers Golf Tourney.
  • Distinguished Public Servant: Marvin Smith, City of Brady Streets, Parks, Gas Department Head: work on special events
  • Director of the Year: Missi Davis: for tireless service and valuable insight.

From a giant chicken being on stage when Mr. Young was presented with his award to the Behrens who had to be "kidnapped" from the K-Life club house to be surprised with their award, it was a fun-filled evening for all that attended!

EDC Days

The Brady Economic Development Corporation will be hosting EDC Days in the Chamber of Commerce board room on February 22, March 22, and April 26 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The purpose of these days is to learn what Brady EDC's role is in the community, spend 1-on-1 time with staff and board of directors, and to have the opportunity to ask questions about EDC.

There is no cost to attend and it is come and go at your own pleasure. If you have any question, please feel free to call the Chamber office at 597-3491 or email us at info@bradytx.com.
Texas Association of Business Lobbying for Franchise Tax Cuts

AUSTIN, TX- The Texas Association of Business (TAB) has launched an on-line petition drive to encourage the passage of $1.8 billion in tax relief targeted at Texas small business.

"Small businesses are the job creators in Texas," said Bill Hammond, TAB President and CEO. "We feel targeting tax relief towards small business will rev up the job creation engine in this state."

The tax relief plan would make permanent the $1 million franchise tax exemption. This would allow businesses who have less than $1 million in taxable income to avoid paying the tax.  It also creates a $1 million franchise tax deduction, where businesses could deduct their first $1 million in taxable income.

"If a business is paying taxes on $2 million a year now, this deduction would cut their tax bill in half," said Hammond.  "That would be an immediate stimulus for that business."

This plan will also bring more equity to the overall taxing system.  "If a business has $900,000 in taxable income right now they don't pay any taxes, but a business that has $1.1 million in taxable income pays taxes on that whole amount," said Hammond.  "Under this plan, that business would only pay taxes on the $100,000 in taxable income, instead of the full amount.  This plan certainly creates more fairness than the current system does."

The online petition is linked on the front page of the Texas Association of Business's website, http://www.txbiz.org/.
