At the September 28 Annual Parish Meeting, we will elect three new vestry members to replace the three whose terms are concluding (Lauren Hildebrand, Beth Riordan, and Doug Smith). Please consider prayerfully whether you might be called to this important role.
Please contact Beth Riordan, who is heading up the vestry Nominating Committee, for more information or to express your interest.
1. Requirements: By Canon law (law of the larger church that governs each parish), you must be:
a. Confirmed or received as a member of the Episcopal Church, or willing to achieve this status.
b. A regular attender of worship services.
c. "Known to the Treasurer" - meaning you give regularly to the parish; it's preferable that you make and fulfill an annual pledge.
2. The Role of the Vestry: Serving on the vestry is a sacred ministry in and for the Body of Christ. The vestry is charged with property management as well as fiduciary administration and human resources oversight. While the vestry makes use of skills from the world of business and management, it is more than a typical "taking care of business" group. Its call is to discern the will of God for the church community and to guide the parish in carrying out that will. Therefore, members of the vestry are expected to bring the resources of the faith to bear in all their work.
3. How Much Time It Will Take: Each vestry member is expected to:
a. Attend a monthly meeting, usually on a Thursday evening. The meeting includes a brief Bible study and prayer.
b. Attend at least one annual retreat, usually a Friday evening plus most of the next day. This year's first vestry retreat will be on Friday, November 7 and Saturday, November 8.
c. Carry out "vestry duty" at worship services in rotation with other members. Usually this means attendance at one or two worship services a month, including the 5:00 service, and means staying after the service to help count offerings and to straighten up and close the buildings.
d. Serve as liaison to one or two church committees. As liaison, you will elicit information from your assigned committee chairs to report on monthly at the vestry meetings.
e. Be available to lead or oversee the leadership of a parish program and/or to take responsibility for the achievement of a parish goal.
4. The Rewards:
a. A great opportunity to use your gifts (spiritual and otherwise).
b. Satisfaction of serving the church in a critically important role.
c. The fellowship of the other vestry members.
d. Eternal thanks from your Vicar.
e. Increased knowledge of church governance and growth in faith.
