FIVE LOAVES HDA MEETING HELD IN PIGNON

robert

Nearly 130 recipients of the Five Loaves Health Development
Account Program gathered in Pignon, Haiti on March 21 to hear
about the benefits of the program, receive instruction on how to
use it and to share testimonies to encourage other recipients.
John Robert, Haitian Director of the program, invited families who
are in the program to gather for worship and prayer followed by
instruction and information as well as a time for questions.
(photo on left) A show of hands indicated that well over half of
those attending had used the program since its inception a year ago.

                                                                                       HDA meeting
The Five Loaves Program matches sponsors in the U.S. with     Haitian families who could not otherwise afford health care services. The cost to sponsor a family in Haiti is $200 per person with a max of $1,000 per year regardless of the number in the family.
The program includes a yearly check up and all health care services and medications provided by Hospital Bienfaisance in Pignon. Sponsors can choose to sponsor one or more individuals in a family or opt for the whole family. The sponsor receives a photo of the persons they are sponsoring along with information on how the account is being used by the recipient. A key element in the enrollment process is sharing
the gospel with the family in Haiti and letting them know that this program is being offered in the name of Jesus from families in the US. So far, there are more than 50 families enrolled in the program with nearly 25 families still needing sponsors.

Denny Brand, Executive Director of Promise for Haiti, and his wife, Bev, attended the meeting and were encouraged by the many wonderful testimonies shared by the recipients. Read a few of the testimonies below:

"My mother died of a blood disorder a few months ago. But even though we lost
her, we are so thankful that she could have care at the hospital. I really thank
God for this program and for John Robert. It is a good program and we received
$100 to help us with her funeral expenses."

"I am from Bohoc and want to thank God for my sponsor and what John Robert is doing. I have stomach pain and fever and two people carried
me from my house to the hospital in Pignon. The program made it possible for me to
get help that I could not afford. I will pray for this program and for the people who
sponsor my family."

"My son was very sick with blood in his stool and I did not know what to do. Then I remembered that John Robert had talked to us about the Five Loaves program so I called him and he told me we had a sponsor and that we could go to the hospital. I praise God for this program - they took care of my son and he is ok now. I send my love to everyone who helped me."

                                                                   hda man2

"I want to bless the name of Jesus for this program. Everyone is thanking Five Loaves but I want to share the thanks for john Robert because I am a new believer and he helped me find Jesus."

                                                                 hda man3

" I have a growth on my face that was removed - but now it has grown back so I need more surgery. I got help through this program. I thought only the government would do this. How does this work? With the government it is really difficult - it would not be good like this program. I am thankful that Five Loaves came with this to help us. It would be good to have more people in the program."

                                                                hda woman 2
"I am a single mom with 7 children. I was having bad intestinal problems and went to a hospital in Port au Prince. But I could not pay so they would not help me. I came back to Pignon and went to the hospital but had no money to pay. Then I met John Robert and he enrolled my family in Five Loaves. I still have some problems but now I can get some help. I am praying I can find a doctor to help me. I am so grateful and praise God."

                                                               hda man 4

"I thank God for this program. I have five people in my family. I was in the hospital with an infection in my leg. I could not pay and Five Loaves helped me. Now I will not have to sell my chickens to pay the bill - we can keep the chickens to eat. I will need more medicine and I cannot pay for the medicine. It is very important to have the medicine."

                                                                  hda man5
"This program gave my baby his life back. Without money to go to the hospital I would not go. They saved my baby and gave him back to me. I thank Jesus everyday for this program. Without it I would not have Ricardo." (the baby had swelling and a high fever)

    Under Construction in Pignon=Maternity House

At Hospital  Bienfaisance, emphasis has been placed on Mother/Baby health. Dr. Liz Babu,
a board member and an physician, has been a leading advocate for good maternal health in Pignon. Recently she has been involved in fundraising efforts to help with building a Maternity House where women will be able to receive good nutrition and healthcare before and after child birth.

This will greatly decrease the infant mortality rate and save lives of mothers. Please click any
donate button  at the  end of our page if you would like to contribute to this cause.
Below you will see more information and pictures of the project in progress that Liz submitted for your viewing.

Maternity Housing Project

Promise For Haiti is constructing a maternity waiting house (MWH) with ten bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms and a birthing center. Once completed this structure will be able to accommodate ten expecting mothers within the grounds of the hospital, and will be staffed by nurses and an obstetrician on call 24hours/day. This facility would be able to provide housing for mothers before and after delivery.

The development and use of maternity waiting homes have been recommended by the WHO as a strategy for reducing levels of maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. Among women with antenatal risk factors, those who stayed at the MWH were 50% less likely to experience a perinatal death than women who came from home during labor. Currently if a patient is determined to be in need of closer observation but did not meet criteria for hospital admission, she has no choice but to return back home.

The current rates for maternal and infant mortality in the developing world are attributed primarily to high-risk women who deliver at home.  The conditions attributed to high risk pregnancies include obstructed labor, prematurity, antepartum hemorrhage, preeclampsia and eclampsia. These conditions, when monitored, can be managed and treated.  The factors that currently hinder patients from accessing medical care include; transportation, weather and housing.

If circumstances permitted for a woman to be able to travel to the hospital and the doctor determined her in need for frequent monitoring, there is insufficient local accommodations and most people cannot afford to self-pay to stay near the hospital.

Promise For Haiti is supporting the construction of a maternity house.

Promise For Haiti Web Page Keeps Us Informed

Here is a glimpse of what you can find on our web page. Various topics are addressed and
help to keep us informed about this great orgainization! Clearly one can see how divine intervention has led this mission! Praise Be To God!

As Bev Brand  has stated on the Promise For Haiti web page, the citizens in Pignon and the surrounding communities depend on the services of mid-wives and community workers.

Promise for Haiti is not only committed to providing healthcare through the facilities of Hospital Bienfaisance in Pignon, but is committed to bringing needed services to the people in the north central plateau of Haiti.  Hospital Bienfaisance operates and maintains two remote satellite clinics and trains healthcare workers and midwives, which serve the entire catchment area of 145,000 people.

Midwives

MIDWIFE TRAINING

Hospital Bienfaisance has trained over 40 men and women to serve as mid-wives in the surrounding communities.
On-going training is provided annually along with kits and supplies for working in the field.  The maternal mortality rate has improved significantly over the years and now stands at 239 per 100,000 mothers die at birth compared to the overall statistics in Haiti of 630 per 100,000.

COMMUNITY HEALTHCARE WORKERS

During the Cholera outbreak, healthcare workers were trained and sent out in the surrounding community and region to give instruction on hygiene practices to prevent cholera and to hand out literature (with picture instructions) to families in the area.
