Tri-Valley Poverty Awareness Initiative
2016 promises to be a busy and productive year for the Tri-Valley Poverty Awareness Initiative!
In November, TVPAI consolidated their target areas into two committees: Health and Education and Housing. These committees are charged with developing strategies, identifying metrics for measurement, and beginning implementation of these approaches.

Religion Chat at the Muslim Community Center of East Bay
Religion Chats are sponsored by Interfaith Interconnect who arrange for the chats to take place in various Tri-Valley religious settings. CCOP hosted one at St. Augustine several months ago. Fr. Paul welcomed everyone warmly. The chat was very well attended, and many people came to CCOP for the first time.
The January Religion Chat will be held at the Muslim Community Center, 5724 West Las Positas Blvd., Suite 300, Pleasanton, CA on Wednesday, January 13, 2016. The topic will be "What is your faith's position on an afterlife?" The speakers will be Ms. Janet Milder, who will speak about the Jewish perspective, and Imam Tahir Anwar, who will discuss the Muslim point-of-view.The doors will open at 4:30, and the program will run from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The Center will remain open until at least 6:30 PM to encourage inter-religious conversation. Hope to see you there!
FYI
MCC is dedicated to providing religious, educational, social, and recreational services to the Muslim community of the Tri-Valley area. An important part of MCC's charter is to facilitate dialogue with other communities and faiths and to develop understanding and harmony.

Parenting in America
Outlook, worries, aspirations are strongly linked to financial situation
Contemporary debates about parenthood often focus on parenting philosophies: Are kids better off with helicopter parents or a free-range approach? What's more beneficial in the long run, the high expectations of a tiger mom or the nurturing environment where every child is a winner? Is overscheduling going to damage a child or help the child get into a good college? While these debates may resonate with some parents, they often overlook the more basic, fundamental challenges many parents face, particularly in families with lower incomes. A broad, demographically based look at the landscape of American families reveals stark parenting divides linked less to philosophies or values and more to economic circumstances and changing family structure.
