Tonight at 7:30 Fr. Stephan Kappler, Psy.D will give a talk on "Living with Emotional Balance" at St. Elizabeth Seton Church.  Fr. Kappler is the founder/director of an assessment, psychotherapy, and consultation practice in Oakland and also a pastor.  This will be the first of a series by four invited speakers.

 Care of the mentally ill

The announcement of a week-long strike by 2,600 mental health workers against Kaiser Permanente has raised questions about the quality of care of the mentally ill in California and throughout the country.  Newsweek magazine in February last year reported that nearly one in five Americans suffer from mental illness each year and about 4% suffer serious illness, impeding normal daily activities.  The website of the National Alliance on Mental Illness is a goldmine of information.  A blog from the University of Notre Dame ponders the Catholic Church's response to mental illness, particularly at the parish and diocesan levels.

Danish Ambassador Peter Taksoe-Jensen spent a weekend in Vermont this month [May, 2013] traveling with me to town meetings in Burlington, Brattleboro and Montpelier. Large crowds came out to learn about a social system very different from our own which provides extraordinary security and opportunity for the people of Denmark.
