     Program to Spark Community Dialogue

Join us for an exciting hands-on experience!

The Theater of the Oppressed (TO) was created by the Brazilian Augusto Boal in the early seventies in São Paulo, Brazil.  It was a time of dictatorships in many countries in Latin America and Boal used the theater to denounce political repression.  This methodology has spread to more than 50 countries and is used to address all individual and societal forms of oppression in a creative, non-violent way.   The methodology is an example of popular education where the experience and wisdom of all participants is valued and education is a process of dialogue and discovery.

In this workshop, we will engage in games and exercises to help identify mechanisms of oppression in our daily lives.  Throughout the day, we will work collectively towards preparing a short play to present after the 9:30 am mass on Sunday, November 24th.
The workshop facilitator is Maryknoll Lay Missioner Flavio Rocha who has worked with diverse TO groups in Brazil for 8 years.  Flavio is doing doctoral studies at the Catholic University of São Paulo in social sciences.
