Ann, please tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Ann Tudor and I am a glass artist and jewelry designer by profession and a knitter for fun. My glass work is done using a technique called lampworking or torchwork. Rods of colored glass are melted with a torch and the hot glass is manipulated into different shapes. My glass work ranges from beads to larger home decor items that I create using glass sculptural pieces and metal. My jewelry has evolved over the years and currently I am incorporating non-traditional items into my pieces. My latest creative work however, has been making stitch markers for knitting and crochet.
How did you start making stitch markers?
Actually, Lisa asked if I could make my jewelry charms into stitch markers, and that sparked a whole new product line for me! The vast majority of my work has come from suggestions and custom orders for clients. A few years ago, a client asked me to make glass charms for a bracelet to represent the plays her daughter had been in. I made a red and white striped hat for Cat in the Hat, a glass slipper for Cinderella, a red apple for Sleeping Beauty, and many more. Lisa had seen some of these and asked me if I could make them into stitch markers. So from that request, they have morphed into what I am creating today. I changed the size and shape so they are lighter and eliminated the need for an additional metal piece to run through the center to prevent snagging. I asked knitters and crocheters for suggestions and from all the input, I created my first set of Sheep Stitch Markers, 5 white sheep and 1 black sheep in 4 needle sizes and a clasp for crochet.
Next came pigs, 5 pink and 1 black with a pink snout.
Now, I have just released my holiday collection which is a set of 6 markers, all different. The holiday set includes a Snowman, Santa, Reindeer, Penguin, Poinsettia and Christmas tree.
Soon there will be a cat set, then who knows from there! I have lots of ideas! In addition, the stitch markers have spawned a new jewelry line that I will be working on. I will be using the holiday markers for earrings as requested by my non-knitty clients!
My website is www.anntudor.com where I have my online shop, blog and newsletter sign up.
My new favorite place is Periscope: AnnTudorLLC, where I do demonstrations of glass work among other things.
