Scholars 2 Months Into Their Internship Adventures!

Mannkal's e-Focus
February 2016

Greetings!

The month of January saw many New Year's resolutions well underway (and some already disposed with), the celebration of our nation's spirit through Australia Day, and the conclusion of a second month abroad for Mannkal's scholars.

To keep up to date with scholar adventures, follow their blogs here!

In the next couple of weeks, Mannkal scholars will venture to Washington DC for the International Students for Liberty Conference. The world's largest crowd of pro-liberty students will gather at the Marriott Wardman Park Exhibition Hall for a weekend to learn from contemporary leaders in liberty, discuss best practices for promoting freedom on campus and debate all of the available avenues for bringing about a freer future.

The theme for this year's conference is,
The Liberty Vote. 'Will the two-party system survive? Is a third-party alternative possible? Or, is social change best created outside of the political realm altogether through entrepreneurial innovations like those which make up the sharing economy?'

Mannkal is also excited to sponsor 7 students to attend the Asia Liberty Forum in Kuala Lumpur this February. To read more about the Asia Liberty Forum please scroll down.

What's new with our scholars?

Bianca Talbot-IPA

"This week I explored the Andy Warhol and Ai Weiwei exhibition.
Ai Weiwei is a Chinese political activist who speaks against the authoritarian nature of the Chinese government in an effort to fight for individual freedom, freedom of speech and a democratic China."

Quentin Wong- ILS

"As I write this blog, I am on a very long bus ride back to Ottawa after a whirlwind weekend in Niagara Falls.

On Tuesday, I met Mark Cameron, the Executive Director at Canadians for Clean Prosperity. Up until this point I had been concerned about the role the environment played in the libertarian movement. It was really rewarding to hear from people that believe that market forces are the solution to environmental problems."

Wei Tien Sng- CapX

"I wrote another article this week on popular economic fallacies and the impact and influence they have over policy makers (To read, please
Researching a variety of topics has broadened my perspective - compared to the limited, rather one-sided views we are taught at university, I have realised how pervasive economics really is, and how much we still can learn from applying different theories to real-world situations in order to make sense of human behaviour, both rational and irrational."

The Electricity Industry Sparks Interference From Policymakers

As a 2016 Mannkal Scholar at CapX in London, Wei Tien Sng produces weekly topical articles - from the repercussions of economic fallacies to the policies that strangle the electricity  industry.

Below is a selection of Wei's articles. To keep up to date with her publications, please follow here!

The Electricity Industry Sparks Interference From Policymakers

'The nationalisation of the electricity industry in the years following World War II was due to the ideological climate of the time. With improvements in technology and an inefficient system of state-supplied electricity, the UK led the way in implementing key reforms. The promotion of capitalism, market deregulation and increasing privatisation led to falling electricity charges for consumers and industrial users (26% for consumers with a much larger fall for industries)....'

Do It Yourself Economics

'Throughout history, records exist of situations in which economic policies have been influenced or decided by firmly-held beliefs which have little or nothing to do with proper economic treatises or textbooks. Dubbed 'pre-economics' by David Henderson in his blog for the IEA, these ideas have had a pervasive influence on events and policies which economists and others are inclined to play down or overlook....'

What Makes Israel the Tech Capital of the World

What does Israel have a globally competitive, knowledge-based technology sector?

'What is the cause of Israel's high ranking? Some, like Eliana Rubee at the Observer, have attributed this in part to the Israeli people and culture, so inextricably linked with Judaism.'

Bianca Talbot- Mannkal Scholar at IPA

Bianca has written a facinating piece for The Western Australian Jurist called:

'Radical Feminism's Opposition To Liberty'

'The radical feminist, Kelly Weisberg, stated that 'the rule of law is too
"patriarchal" ...This article critically analyses the radical feminist endorsement of a culture of victimhood coupled with the stereotyping of women as being 'damsels in distress' in a liberal society...'.

Quote of the Month

UBER

"It was interesting to hear one of the speakers, who advocated more regulation, claim that Australia has been progressive and innovative in resolving tensions between taxi drivers and Uber drivers, specifically referring to the New South Wales government's decision to provide taxi drivers with $250 million in compensation. Now, I'm no English major but as far as I'm aware, neither the definition of "progressive" nor "innovative" encompass spending $250 million of taxpayers' money to support an outdated industry."

Fixing The Unfixable
2/02/16

The Mannkal Foundation has, over several years, supported the work of the Exercise Medicine Research Institute (EMRI) at Edith Cowan University (ECU).

EMRI has become one of the world's leaders in researching and translating exercise as a medicine for the treatment of prostate cancer (particularly relevant to Australia as we are known to be amongst the highest rates of prostate cancer per head of male population).

Among EMRI's advanced equipment is the NeuroCom Smart Balance Master, state-of-the-art for assessment and training of balance, imported from the USA at a cost of $143,000 AUD.

Recently Mannkal's Chairman, Ron Manners, noticed that a replacement unit had been ordered by ECU as the original unit had been left unfixed by a visiting technician from the USA.

Ron's son, Ian Manners, a computer technician who has earned a reputation for 'fixing the unfixable' was promptly sent to ECU by the Mannkal Foundation and after three visits had the 'unfixable' working again like new.

Now ECU's Exercise Medicine Research Institute has two fully operational NeuroCom Smart Balance Master systems, the first being installed at EMRI for clinical assessment and research and the repaired system now enthusiastically being used at the health clinic for therapy in a range of patients from cancer to Parkinson's.

Paul's Perspective

'The Next Financial Crisis?'

Why hasn't the global economy recovered from the Global Financial Crisis?

Why has all the "Quantitative Easing" money thrown at the problem failed to fix it - and where did all that money go?

'The alleged benefits of QE haven't transpired but the increased debt remains.'

What's next?

Read All About It!

The European Union is Heading for the Dustbin of History

A Goal Debt Time Bomb is Ticking

Between 2007-08 and mid 2014, global debt totalled 286% of GDP. This debt has flowed into emerging markets in search of positive returns and into exposures to the commodities boom the phenomenal growth in China generated.

'The devaluations of emerging market and developing economy currencies and the dramatic collapse in commodity prices are now amplifying the problem by increasing local currency costs and principal repayments even as economic growth rates in those economies are slowing and inflows of new capital are drying up.'

Does the potential for an emerging market financial crisis represent the economy currencies and the catalyst for another,
very severe, European banking crisis?

Overcoming Poverty, Advancing Economic Freedom by Reframing the Debate

'Why isn't economic freedom - or its core elements of personal choice, security of person and property, voluntary exchange,

and the freedom to enter markets and compete - at center stage in policy discussions, given its critical and empirically documented role in fostering growth and reducing poverty?'

Capitalism Defeats Marginalisation

The best way to bring marginalised communities into the mainstream is by allowing people to trade freely through contract without intervention. There is no better system than the market to bring people together who would not otherwise do so.
