Launch of the 2015 Economic Freedom of the World Index
October 29th, 2015
Mannkal is excited to announce that in conjunction with the IPA, it will hold the Australian launch of the 2015 Fraser Institute's Economic Freedom of the World Index in Perth.
The Index measures the degree of economic freedom in 186 countries based on factors including the Rule of Law, Limited Government, Regulatory Efficiency and Open Markets. Poverty and sickness are receding throughout the world largely due to advances in economic freedom. In 2011 Western Australia was assessed as the most economically free jurisdiction in Australia. Are we still #1? And how do we compare to our regional competitors?

Mannkal Scholar Articles
|
Hayley Pring, our mid-2015 scholar at the Friedrich Naumann Foundation
for Freedom in Berlin recently wrote a report on "Bridging the Gap: Understanding the Impact of TPP on Australia, and the Future of Free Trade".
In this report she introduces the topic by presenting common false beliefs surrounding free trade, cemented by politicians who wish to get re-elected. These beliefs include the claim that trade is a zero sum game, a lack of trust that the market mechanism is efficient and domestic job losses.
Hayley explains the broad benefits of the TPP for Australia and the specific benefits for different industries. Her critical analysis of the TPP concludes that as a purely free trade agreement it is a great initiative, however there are many areas dragging out negotiations.

Atlas Network's Tom Palmer contrasts cronyism and free-market capitalism
Dr. Tom Palmer, executive vice president for international programs at the Atlas Network and senior fellow at the Cato Institute notes common misconceptions in society towards the attitudes surrounding Capitalism. Many complaints about capitalism are not about free markets, but rather about privilege and 'cronyism'. What is the difference between the two?
Berg: Why the Magna Carta is still important
The IPA's Chris Berg discusses the Magna Carta in relation to tax. The Magna Carta established a permanent relationship between the power to tax and our individual rights. Parliament and the rule of law were forged in a tax revolt when Barons in 1215 decided that King John was imposing excessive and arbitrary taxation on his subjects. The rights we have as a society today were fought for, defended and established over 800 years by people who saw that their ancient liberties were being trampled on by oppressive and high taxing governments.
John Stossel ~ Morality Of Capitalism
Media personality, John Stossel interviews John Mackay on his novel, 'Conscious Capitalism'. Why is business the biggest value creator in the world? How do we justify capitalism? Business is a great value creator and has lifted billions of people out of poverty in the last 200 years but is it selfish, greedy and exploitative?
Protecting jobs from extreme green lawfare
Federal Member for Dawson, George Christensen, asks Prime Minister Tony Abbott how the Australian government is defending jobs from the actions of extreme green groups who are against projects that bring investment and jobs to Australia.
