Quote of the Month

"Order without liberty and liberty without order are equally destructive."

Paul's Perspective

on the Inter-Generational Report

The recent release of the Federal Government's Inter-Generational Report makes for sobering reading. The good news is that incomes doubled in real terms over the last 40 years, driven by a doubling in our productivity. The bad news is that there are dark clouds on our budgetary horizon and we must face some difficult choices.

The IGR is a signpost that Australia's post-WWII welfare state is seriously broken. The combination of an ageing population, unfunded pensions, high household and government debt, an overpriced housing sector, a punitive tax system and an over-reaching welfare state have pushed the previous compact past its limit. The Centre for Independent Studies has found that the majority of households are net welfare beneficiaries after tax, yet the average taxpayer is forecast to be pushed into the second-highest marginal tax bracket next year. We have reached Margaret Thatcher's famous prediction: we have run out of other people's money. This has happened just as the digital revolution has brought a previously unseen level of competition to the labour market and competition for some of our service sector exports.

Australia's future prosperity relies on less taxation, redistribution and borrowing and on greater competitiveness and productivity. The sooner we act, the less harsh the adjustment will be. I urge you all to read the IGR and let your Federal MP know that you expect true leadership and less politics from Canberra. No less than our future wealth is at stake.

Government-Run Education Systems Do NOT Work
"Education is vitally important to our families and to the future of our society" claims David Boaz, Executive Vice President of the Cato Institute. For this reason, it should be controlled by families and not run by a bureaucracy. To hear more, click here.
