Mannkal's e-Focus

Greetings!,

August was an exciting month for the Mannkal team with the production of the August edition of Mannkal's Musings, hosting the inaugural "Future Leaders Forum: WA and The Global Economy" and the selection of scholars to attend the Samuel Griffith Conference and Mont Pelerin Society General Meeting.

Mannkal Chairman Ron Manners recently arrived in one of the freest cities in the world, Hong Kong. Bringing with him six bright young Mannkal Scholars, Ron is currently attending the Mont Pelerin Society General Meeting. With current tensions over the state of democracy in Hong Kong running high, Mannkal Scholars will undoubtedly be immersed in the fight for freedom.

Future Leaders Forum: WA and The Global Economy

Mannkal, in conjunction with the University of Notre Dame, was pleased to host the inaugural "Future Leaders Forum: WA and the Global Economy" on 20 August. The Hon. Richard Court AC was guest speaker for the evening delivering an informative address on matters including equalisation, privatisation and federalism. The event was an overwhelming success providing a dynamic environment in which past, present and future scholars were able to engage in discussion with other university students and members of the Western Australian community.

A Threat to Freedom of Speech

Will you take action to restore freedom of speech?
Prime Minister Tony Abbott has broken his pre-election promise to reform the infamously flawed section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act. Why has Mr Abbott retracted his pre-election promise after proclaiming that "without free speech, free debate is impossible and, without free debate, the democratic process cannot work properly"?

The Australian Taxpayers' Alliance believes that our politicians must be held accountable and that Mr Abbott is duty-bound to fulfil his promise. That is why they have created a website to allow you to tell the government how much free speech and reform of section 18C means to you. Please click here to have your say!

No more compulsory Student Amenities Fee!
In 2010, the Gillard government introduced a compulsory student amenities fee for university students eliminating individual freedom to choose what services each student actually wants. With the fee reaching as high as $281 in some cases, students who make little use of university services are clearly at a disadvantage! To check out the compulsory fee debate, please click here .

Whoever thought that the Fed could 'fix' the economy?

"In truth the Fed did not fix the economy. In other words, Janet Yellen is searching for a justification to continue the money printing if the bubbles start leaking again". Read more here.

Look Who's Talking

Deirdre McCloskey on the Great Enrichment
A must-see clip in which Deirdre McCloskey emphasises that our focus should be on the working class rather than the divide between the rich and the poor. She goes on to discuss the phenomena of the "Great Enrichment", a reference to rising standards of living across both the rich and the poor since 1800. Watch it here > > >
