Mannkal's e-Focus
Greetings!,
Mannkal's office has been bursting at the seams over November with preparations for departing domestic and international scholars. Our International Scholars will be departing this month to a variety of think tanks around the globe. In November, Mannkal sent 6 scholars to attend the upcoming Mises Seminar in Brisbane.
Mannkal is also pleased to welcome home the Samuel Griffith Scholars. The Conference hosted eminent speakers from Australia's legal community who discussed federalism, judicial power (focusing on the Kable principle), referenda and much more. To view James Illich's article on Gim Del Villar's, "Kable: The Dog that Won't be Silent", please scroll down. One of our scholars, Murray Tennent-Brown, shared his experience of the Hawkesbury Tour, which concluded the intellectually stimulating weekend:
"Mannkal scholars attending the recent Samuel Griffith Society annual conference in Sydney from 8-10 November were fortunate to partake in a tour of the Hawkesbury River. It was there in 1891 that the Australian Constitution's principal authors (including Sir Samuel Griffith) largely drafted the Constitution aboard the Queensland government steamer, the 'Lucinda'. During the tour, Julian Lesser of the Samuel Griffith Society provided an excellent historical overview of the prominent drafters present aboard the Lucinda and their diverse individual backgrounds. The tour brought to life the many hurdles that had to be overcome by Australia's politicians and leading citizens of the day to unite Australia into a cohesive federation."

On the regional front, the phone tapping scandal between Australia and Indonesia has threatened to negatively impact on our economy. With total trade between Indonesia and Australia worth more than $11 billion last year, the "freeze" in relations may produce negative effects. Indonesian Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan expressed the very real possibility of this fear materialising when he said, "It is difficult if two neighbours can't trust each other, to think about anything related to economic cooperation".

Mannkal's Plans for 2014
| |
One of the enjoyable aspects of handing over the Mannkal CEO role to George Bowen is that it should give me more time for "quiet reflection".
The two most often asked questions about Mannkal from many of our 650 former Mannkal scholars are.....
"We appreciate being introduced to the world of free-market ideas but how can we learn more and meet people who have successfully integrated these ideas into their lives and careers?"
The answer ...
"A range of Perth-based opportunities already exist (usually publicized on www.mannkal.org) and Mannkal has already started playing an active role in publicising interstate and international events such as:
- The annual Mises Seminar (Sydney / Brisbane) ... next month's e-Focus will feature a full report on the six scholars who attended this year.
- The annual Atlas Network Liberty Forum in New York City (mark next year's dates in your diary - 12 - 13 November 2014) and for a full report of the Mannkal team's active participation last month, see "Atlas Liberty Forum NYC" below.
- The Mont Pelerin Society Annual Meeting in Hong Kong (31 August - 6 September, 2014) .. by invitation. This event will include special side meetings run by the Atlas Network and the Foundation for Economic Education Inc."
The second question from our ever-expanding network of supporters ...
"We like what you are doing with your network of young people and would like to assist in expanding your activities plus be part of any events you run, beyond the scope of your student work."
The answer ...
"We are creating a special category such as 'Mannkal.org Ambassador' where supporters can attend specific events covering business / political and industrial relations focused activities - in addition to providing a pro-active audience for our returning scholars when they present their findings to the Mannkal Board and staff."
Further details are currently being refined but we encourage any interested parties to contact George Bowen - george.bowen@mannkal.org or myself - ron.manners@mannkal.org, to express their own interest.
