Mannkal's e-Focus

Greetings!,

This month we had the pleasure of welcoming to Perth, Dan Grossman, Chairman of the Atlas Economic Research Foundation in Washington, D.C. Dan spent time in the Mannkal office discussing a range of topical issues with past and present Mannkal Scholars and provided an interesting perspective on think-tanks around the world. Please scroll down to access a copy of Dan Grossman's speech.

We were also pleased to co-host an event with the Freedom and Prosperity Club - Meetup Group, in Perth. Professor Don Turkington discussed the pressing issue, "Is Australia facing a financial black hole?" Professor Turkington brought to the forefront the fundamental flaws in Keynesian economics and emphasised the unsustainable debt that many countries around the world, including Australia, have succumbed to.

A concise summary of Professor Turkington's views on the matter features in recently released August edition of the Institute of Public Affair'IPA Review.

Quote of the Month

It was the dying days of the Coalition government in the early 1980s. The prime minister, Malcolm Fraser, called a partyroom meeting and asked for suggestions for winning the upcoming election.

Up piped West Australian 'Dry' John Hyde: "Why not try good government, Malcolm? It might be popular."

- Judith Sloan, The Australian 10/13

Was Milton Friedman Wrong About Everything?
In this article Bloomberg columnist, Megan McArdle, critiques a recent article by Krugman on whether Milton Friedman's contributions to public policy remain relevant today. The most important point to take away from this article? It's never a great idea to draw inferences from the time and place you happen to be living in! More > > >

Is this the end of Australia's Mining Boom?

We have experienced the biggest mining boom in Australia's history, but is this the end? Our mineral exports, national income and government revenue are declining from the levels they formerly were. The major concern is that the benefits of the boom have not been saved. Ron Manners, Chairman of Mannkal Economic Education Foundation, recently presented a talk to the Lion Rock Institute advocating a 'survival through flexibility' approach.

   Freedom of Speech Tour, Perth

Freedom of speech is fundamental to Australian society. Join The Australian's, Nick Cater and IPA's Chris Berg and Simon Breheny, for a vital look into the current threats to freedom of speech. The Andrew Bolt case in 2011, Nicola Roxon's 2012 proposal to seriously curtail free speech and Stephen Conroy's recent attack on the media, are excruciating proof that freedom of speech is being undermined in Australia. Mannkal and IPA members are invited to attend this event free of charge. For more information and to register, please click here.
