Mannkal's e-Focus

Greetings!,

This month features part three of our 'Productivity and Competitiveness in Australia' series.

We thank each of the guest writers for their contributions as it has raised much discussion. Australia's decline in productivity simply must be revised before we export futher industries and jobs.

Last week, The University of Notre Dame and Mannkal hosted the annual Freedom to Choose Conference for 2013. Attendees were able to listen to a series of esteemed speakers discuss 'The Economics of Government Failure' and its associated consequences. The keynote speaker for the event was Professor Geoffrey Brennan from Australian National University and the event itself was a great success.

The HETSA Conference was also held at the UWA Business School last week, with Mannkal pleased to send Conrad Karageorge to the event. Stay tuned for Conrad's report on the conference on the Mannkal website!

July also sees Mannkal Scholars John Webster, Timothy Lefroy, Jiamin Lim and Helen Le venture off to London, Washington DC, and Hong Kong to start the Mannkal Mid-Year Internship Program. The scholars will be interning at the Institute of Economic Affairs, Atlas Foundation and the Lion Rock Institute.  We wish each of our interns the best on their internships! Stay tuned to our Scholars page on our website for updates on our scholars.

   Do Schools Kill Creativity?
This TED Talk by Sir Ken Robinson raises an interesting argument on whether the education system in the US is dampening creativity amongst developing minds. Could this be a relevant factor to explain the similar phenomenon of 'cookie cutter' students (and later university graduates) that have led to Australia's dwindling innovative climate relative to our global counterparts?
