Mannkal's Focus
Greetings!,
Mannkal had a busy month in September. Chris Berg, from the Institute of Public Affairs in Melbourne, came to speak at our joint Mannkal ECOMS Student Dinner. Chris spoke to 50 interested Uni students about freedom of speech and freedom of the media. It was a great success and we thank Chris for coming over to Perth for the event. Click here to see photos from the evening.
This month my regular Mannerisms feature (see below) takes a look at my "Three Adventures in Turkey".

Andrew Bolt's Case is Resolved in Court The assumed right of unfettered freedom of speech was trumped by laws protecting against racial vilification this morning after the Federal Court delivered its decision on the controversial "white Aborigines" case of Pat Eatock v Herald Sun columnist Andrew Bolt. More > >. The Institute of Public Affairs conducted a poll regarding freedom of speech, and found that 82% of people thought free speech was more important than someone being offended. Kingdom of Bigdom

Stop the Mining Tax
The Gillard Government's punitive Mining Tax legislation will be introduced into the Federal Parliament by December. If passed, it will apply from July 2012. Once passed it will be virtually impossible to repeal and this very bad piece of legislation will impact on Australia's best performing industry for many generations to come. No-one wants this tax. Not BHP, Rio Tinto and Xstrata who agreed to accept it so they could escape being seen as arrogant multi-nationals; not the Greens Party; Not most members of Julia Gillard's Government. Certainly not most Australians. Click here to read more from the Stop The Mining Tax website. |
