 IN THE SPOTLIGHT
February Chapter Meeting: Grill the Estimator
Alicia Clark, CSI-EP, Programs Chair

Join meeting with ASPE
Tuesday, February 9th from 5:30 to 8:00 PM
Elephant's on Corbett, 5221 SW Corbett Avenue, Portland
Panelists: Steve Clapp, Hoffman Construction; Steve Kelly, Rider Levett Bucknall, Mike Reed, Market Contractors; Jim Carkin, Emerick Construction

We are busy getting ready for the Grill the Estimator in February. Tweet me any questions you might have for our panel of esteemed estimators to @AliClarkpdx. This will be a good opportunity for designers to understand how estimators put a bid together and for product reps to ask why contractors don't use their product even though it is specified. There are a lot of different ways estimators prepare a bid, and most people outside of the contractor's office don't get to peak behind the curtain, so this is your chance! REGISTER TODAY >

Industry Forum 2016: Keynote Announced
Tony Divincenzo, CSI, IF Committee Chair

Plans for the 2016 Industry Forum, Theory of Practice, on May 11, 2016 are well underway! We are pleased to offer this opportunity to the community! This is the construction industry event of the year you do not want to miss!

We're proud to announce this year's keynote speaker - nationally-renowned architect and urban designer Robert "Rob" Rogers, FAIA of New Your City's Rogers PartnersRob creates institutional and cultural buildings that are civic works. Believing that even a single building is a piece of urban design and that every surface deserves intimate attention, his work assertively and elegantly combines urbanism and architecture. From reinventing the security bollard to redesigning a subtle icon on the National Mall, Rob continually elevates accepted conventions in his quest to develop intelligent, rich and timeless contributions to our physical environment. Rob graduated from the Harvard Graduate School of Design with a Masters of Design Studies with Distinction.

Key Clauses of the General Conditions; Complementary
Sheldon Wolfe, RA, FCSI, CCS, CCCA, CSC

Although it didn't seem like it at the time, one of the best parts of my CSI chapter's certification classes was reading the A201 - not selectively, but the whole thing, beginning to end. Being the heart of the construction contract, anyone who works on a project should know what's in it. I can't quote every part of it, but it's familiar enough that I can find what I'm looking for fairly quickly. I don't deal with much of it, e.g., claims and time requirements, but there are a few parts that I find of particular interest. We'll start with what I call the complementary clause. READ MORE >

Grill the Architect: A New Kind of Cook Book
Presented by ASPE

Tuesday, February 16, 2016
University Place, 310 SW Lincoln, Portland

It's a love-hate relationship. The construction trades (aka "builders") need architects to show them what needs to be built and the level of quality. And architects need builders to turn their concepts into functioning realities. But why all the contentiousness in arriving at this mutual goal? This is your opportunity to find out why you must risk your company's economic future on what appears to be an incomplete, contradictory, or risky set of bidding documents. REGISTER HERE >
CSI's mission it to advance building information management and education of project teams to improve facility performance. We are the only organization that brings together all the players in the built industry.
