Hammer and Anvil cover
7th Annual Community Read
Honor the sesquicentennial of the Civil War with 2 traveling panel exhibitions, 10 events and a community read book. The panels are on view from Oct. 7 - 27. Presentations cover a variety of topics including:  hands-on history for students, genealogy, two events showcasing local soldiers, women's history, the impact of photography, and stories about local slaves & free blacks in early Beverly. The Hammer and the Anvil is a graphic novel, which contains a vast amount of visual material which highlights the parallels between Douglass & Lincoln.
Word Bubbles and Thought Balloons: The Graphic Novel as an Art Form Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 7:00 is presented by Montserrat College of Art professors Adam Miller and Blyth Hazen.
Our keynote speaker: Dwight Jon Zimmerman, author of The Hammer and the Anvil will present at Gordon College's Ken Olsen Science Center on Thursday, Nov.7: reception at 6:30, lecture at 7:30 (please note: the Library will close at 5:00 to convene at Gordon College.) Community Read events have been generously funded by the Friends of the Library.

Megan Marshall's Latest Work: Margaret Fuller
Wednesday, Oct. 30, 7:00 pm.  Noted biographer Megan Marshall comes to share her newest work with us: Margaret Fuller: A New American Life. "The award-winning author of The Peabody Sisters looks at the trailblazing life of Margaret Fuller, Thoreau's editor, Emerson's friend, daring war correspondent and tragic heroine."  Join us as the author talks about how she brought her subject to full psychological life amidst meticulous research.
Teen News & Children's Room
The next Teen Think Tank meeting is on Thursday, Oct. 3 from 6:30-7:45. This team brought you Minecraft gaming at the library, new music selections and a revamped teen area.  Join the group and have a say in what the future holds.
Children's Room Pumpkin Decorating Contest is now accepting decorated, not carved, pumpkins. Open to all ages, details are here.
College Financial Aid Workshop Thursday, Oct. 17, 7:00-8:30. Presented by Certified College Planning Specialist Jim Femia, for parents and students. There are billions of dollars available in need-based and merit-based aid available every year to assist students in paying for college. In order to receive financial aid however, the proper paperwork must be submitted accurately and on time. Many of these forms, FAFSA, CSS Profile, Institutional Forms, etc. can be longer and more complicated than the federal tax forms. This workshop is designed to introduce the financial aid process and provide helpful hints to potentially increase your financial aid eligibility.
Harry Potter Extravaganza!  Saturday, Oct. 19, 1:00. Join us for Harry Potter themed crafts, games and more! Costumes encouraged, muggles are welcome. No registration necessary, open to all ages.
Lives of Civil War Soldiers and Civilians Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 3:00.  
South Coast Historical Associates takes us into the lives of the everyday soldiers and citizens of the Civil War. Using replica firearms and original artifacts such as medical devices, battle flags and everyday items, experience an interactive and engaging program for ages 10+ and adults.  Paid for by a grant from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
Humans Vs. Zombies  Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2:00-5:00 at Pingree Park. Registration is required and opens Monday, Oct. 7. Details forthcoming, keep tabs on the teen blog for news.

Giddy Goat Storytime!

Monday, Oct. 7, 10:30 am.  Join us for a goaty good time filled with stories and songs, then meet two goats: Sweetie & Darling, with owner Jeremy. There will be plenty of time for pictures and petting. All ages are welcome, caregivers must accompany their children, open to the public at no charge.
Dads & Donuts Storytime Saturday, Oct. 12 at 11:00. This story program is specially designed for Dads and children 2 and up. (Moms are always invited.) Coloring, snacks and socializing follows the stories. No registration necessary.
Halloween Storytime & Craft Saturday, Oct. 26 at 11:00.  Pop in for this seasonal storytime, perfect for ages 2 and up, no registration necessary. Hear some gentle Halloween stories and create a craft to take home.
 
We also feature 6 different weekly storytimes and afterschool groups, for ages 0 to 6th grade, including chess and a new program focusing on mythology. Check out the very full schedule on the Children's Room blog.

Mystery Mayhem meets on the 2nd Tuesday at 10:30. Join us to discuss mystery & suspense books & see if you can solve the mystery of the day. The theme for Oct. 8 is "Deadly hobbies: or, The dangers of quilting, genealogy, and gardening". Selected titles include: 
Literary Luncheon meets on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 11:30 to discuss Ashenden by Elizabeth Wilhide. November's title is Day After Night by Anita Diamant.
The Monday Night Book Club meets on Oct. 21 at 7:15 pm. The featured book is Skeletons at the Feast by Chris Bohjalian. November's book is  Isabel Allende's Daughter of Fortune.
'First Fridays' series Bonnie
(Formerly Koffee Klatch) Join us on the first Friday of the month at 10:30 for a guest lecturer, performance, or special event.  
Abolitionists, Sanitary Commissioners and Writers: North Shore Women of the Civil War Friday, Oct. 4 at 10:30.  Presented by women's history scholar Bonnie Hurd Smith. Hear the stories of the North Shore women who worked and did their part to leave behind a legacy of honor and service.  Funded by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

Meet Julia Child! Friday, Nov. 1 at 10:30. Delvena Theater Company's Lynne Moulton performs as Julia Child doing what she did best. Learn more about her life - from her privileged childhood in California, eating what the family's private chef prepared - to becoming one of the culinary legends of all time. The audience will have the opportunity to view Julia on the set of The French Chef television show, an amusing and fun experience! After the performance, the cast will open up for discussion regarding Julia Child. Thanks to the Hamilton-Wenham Cultural Council for funding this performance.

National Novel Writing Month, Our 5th Year
This November, over 300,000 people all over the world will attempt to write a 50,000-word novel by midnight, November 30. Local writers will meet at the library every Saturday in November for write-ins from 10:00-3:45. Come when you can! Leave when you like! Brainstorm, socialize, and boost your word count in the company of others who are doing the same. Last year, some authors produced upwards of 3,000 words in a single session. Holiday Arrangements From Your Yard
Tuesday, Nov. 12, 7:00-8:30 pm. Back by popular demand, Master Gardener Betty Sanders show us how to decorate naturally for the holidays, and bring a little of the garden inside. Beautiful, long-lasting arrangements don't have to be expensive. Betty creates 5 arrangements, primarily using materials that grow in your (or a friends') yard. Each arrangement is done for one holiday (Thanksgiving) and then with just a few changes made suitable for the next (Christmas) and beyond. All of the arrangements will be given away as door prizes. Thank you to the Friends for funding this program.
