Universal Class & Cypress Resume
New Classes
Hamilton-Wenham Library cardholders have the ability to choose from over 500 online (non-college credit) continuing education courses via Universal Class.  These classes offer a real instructor, assignments, & 24/7 course access.  Some topics include: accounting, business, arts, office skills, real estate, test prep, web development and many others.  To get started you will need your H-W Library card and an email address to create an account.

with the Traveling Librarian Jeff Klapes
Wednesday, Feb. 27, 6:30-8:00. Hear all about Paris: hear about the food, see the sights, tour the countryside, and hear a little more about the food. Perfect for armchair travelers, foodies, past visitors, and those who wish to live vicariously. Jeff Klapes, the Traveling Librarian, comes to present his 'Paris in the Springtime' travelogue.

Valentine's Day Stories & Craft Saturday, Feb. 9, 11-Noon.  Join us for Valentine stories and a fun craft to take home. Perfect for ages two and up, no registration required.
 
Time for Teeth!  Saturday, Feb. 16, at 10:30 Celebrate Children's Dental Health Month with local dentist Dr. Priscilla Magnuson. Enjoy stories and songs about teeth, gums and dentists.  All ages welcome. No registration required. Open to the public at no charge.

Oochworld presents: Positive Spin! Thursday, Feb. 21 at 2:00. 
Join motivational speaker, Brett Outchcunis "Ooch", as he uses music, magic, imagination, yos-yos and dance to put on spin on the challenges of growing up.  Recommended for children in K-8. No registration necessary, free and open to the public, so bring a friend. Have a look at his Oochworld website to see what he's all about. Funded by the First Church of Wenham grant. 

Encouraging a Love of Reading: Birth - Kindergarten with Pat Purdy  Tuesday, Feb. 26, 6:30-8.   Pat Purdy presents a workshop for parents and caregivers designed to outline the importance of a young child's home library as well as the roles families play in developing pre-reading skills. The workshop includes: establishing a reading environment, how to select and share stories, reading aloud, and a review of excellent titles children (birth-K) should be exposed to before grade one. Pat Purdy, children's literature specialist, owned Banbury Cross Bookshop in Wenham for 25 years, and before that she was the children's librarian at the Wenham Library for 11 years. She is committed to excellence in children's literature which she enjoys sharing through her workshops and book talks. This program is sponsored by H-W Early Childhood Partners and funded through the CFCE grant from the Mass. Dept. of Early Education and Care. *Snow date Thursday, Feb. 28*

Teen Events

Teen Think Tank Meetings

Thursday, Feb. 7 & March 7, 6:30-7:45 pm.   Make the future happen, create it in your vision. Come share your bright ideas! This group (for patrons ages 11-17) is the Library's teen advisory board. The purpose of the Think Tank is to work with the Young Adult Librarian to improve the programs and services designed specifically for teens. This collaboration includes selecting books, music and movies for the young adult section; brainstorming and creating programs and special events for young adults; and helping with the Library's teen space and webpage. 

Make an Origami Heart Bookmark to Give on Valentine's Day
Wednesday, Feb. 13 from 2:00-5:00 pm.  Stop by the Teen area on the 2nd floor of the Library the day before Valentine's Day and make some origami heart bookmarks to give to friends on Valentine's Day.  For ages 11 to 18, no experience required, the Young Adult Librarian will show you how. Just drop in, no sign up necessary. Origami paper provided by the Friends of the Library, or cut out a square from old magazines.

Movie: The Perks of Being a Wallflower [PG-13]  Thursday, Feb. 21, 6-7:45, & again Friday, Feb. 22, 2:15-4:00. Bring a cushion for the chairs, your own popcorn & a friend. 

Teen Poetry Contest
The Hamilton-Wenham Public Library's 3rd annual themed Teen Poetry Contest starts February 1, and ends at midnight April 30th. The 2013 theme is: Nature and/or Animals.  This contest is open to teens in grades 6 to 12,who are residents of Essex County in Massachusetts.   Prize winning categories: Best Entry Grades 6-8; Best Entry Grades 9-12; Director's Choice Award; Second Place Grades 6-8; Second Place Grades 9-12; Honorable Mentions.
Finalists will be notified by phone or email on or about May 10th. Alice Wentworth Douglin's Autobiography
Friday, March 1, 10:15-Noon.
"Born of a Belgium father, who worked the gold mines and Congolese mother, Alice Burgeon was sent off to the mission school. Due to circumstances in her life, she was adopted by American missionaries. She worked in a medical clinic in Africa before coming to America to prepare for missionary service. Alice later married Deighton Douglin and they served many years as missionaries in the Congo."

Travel to China: Preparation to Immersion with globetrotting photographer Richard Ferland, Friday, April 5, 10:15-Noon.  Photographer and tour guide Richard Ferland takes us on a whirlwind tour of China.  This program is for recreational tourists and business travelers, people who enjoy travel documentaries, as well as anyone with an interest in photography & art.  His presentation concisely covers everything you need to know about communication, etiquette, and a few key phrases that will serve you well. Free and open to the public, bring along a friend.
AARP Tax Appointments 

Appointments are by reservation only on Wednesdays at 10, 10:45 and 11:30 starting Feb. 1 through April 11. These dates fill up quickly, so gather your paperwork and reserve your slot. You will need to bring all of your tax documents from last year, paperwork for this year, and will be required to show your Social Security card. This service is provided by SeniorCare, Inc.

meets Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 10:30.
The February meeting features: "Women of a Certain Age and the Crimes They Solve" with Josephine Carr My Very Own Murder, Nancy Atherton's  Aunt Dimity series, Carolyn Hart Death on the River Walk, Sophie Littlefield A Bad Day for Sorry, M.C. Beaton's Agatha Raisin series, Laramee Douglas A Death in Dulcinea and Cynthia Riggs Paperwhite Narcissus.  Up next for March 12, "Why Didn't I ask the cat (or the dog)?: Pet Mysteries."

Literary Luncheon meets Tuesday, Feb. 19 from 11:30-12:30, bring your brown-bag lunch.  Up for discussion is The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe. On March 19 join us to discuss The Kingmaker's Daughter   by Philippa Gregory.

Monday Night Book Group meets on the 4th Monday of every month at 7:15.  Feb. 25: Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. March 25 features The Paris Wife by Paula McLain.
Boating Safety Course
Thursdays Feb. 28- April 25, 6:00-8:00.
This 8 week course is presented and taught by the U.S. Power Squadrons: "Organized in 1914, USPS is a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to making boating safer and more enjoyable by teaching classes in seamanship, navigation, and related subjects." Classes run Thursdays 6:00-8:00 for 8 weeks, plan to attend all classes, open to adults and students over 12 years, $50 materials fee covers text, plotting tools and exam. Successful completion of the course meets the national educational requirements for boat operation in all states. To register call Ron Mason: 468-4824.
