 Summer Programs for Educators: Accepting Applications!
Bioenergy Institute for Educators 2012: August 13-18 on UW-Madison campus. The Summer Institute offers teams of educators the opportunity to explore core areas of GLBRC research, get hands-on experience with our education materials, and delve into the development of inquiry-based classroom activities. The intensive, six-day program features numerous field trips, workshops, discussions and lab activities.
Teams of 3-4 educators are encouraged. Participants receive a $500 stipend. Applicants will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis. Make sure all team members fill out their registration as soon as possible so you will be considered!

Research Experience for Teachers (RET): July 9-August 18 on UW-Madison campus. RET participants spend six weeks at UW-Madison, where they conduct biofuels research in a GLBRC lab and create classroom activities related to their research. Topics areas for 2012 include biofuel cropping systems and the chemistry of producing biofuels from cellulosic biomass. Participants receive a $7000 stipend.

Principles for Energy Literacy Released!
Energy Literacy: Essential Principles and Fundamental Concepts for Energy Education has been released! The document can be downloaded from the U.S. Global Change Research Program's web site. Development of this guide began at a workshop sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in the fall of 2010. Multiple federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, and numerous individuals, including GLBRC Education and Outreach staff, contributed to development of the guide through an extensive review and comment process. Discussion and information gathered at AAAS, WestEd and DOE-sponsored Energy Literacy workshops in the spring of 2011 contributed substantially to the refinement of the guide.

New Education and Outreach Staff
Welcome, Leith Nye, to the GLBRC Education and Outreach team! Leith will be working on a number of GLBRC activities, specializing in the development of K-16 educational materials and professional development for educators. Leith completed his M.S. in Plant Biology at UW-Madison where he was also a HHMI Scientific Teaching Fellow. A former high school science teacher, research scientist and sustainable energy advocate, he has conducted education outreach in formal and informal settings, and for a wide range of learners and educators. |
Prof. Andy Anderson Receives Career Award
Charles W. "Andy" Anderson, professor of science education at Michigan State University, was selected to receive the 2012 NARST Distinguished Contributions to Science Education through Research Award. The award is considered the NARST's most prestigious for scholars in the field of science education. Andy Anderson has done important work developing learning progressions leading toward Environmental Literacy. Prof. Anderson and his research group have been key collaborators on many GLBRC education and outreach projects.
