Dunham Expanding Mandrels:
Straight Shank Design:
Manually Activated:
Lathes, Grinders, Rotary Tables:
Mount in Jaw Chucks, Vises, Collets, Special Fixtures:
Dunham Expanding Mandrels provide manually activated expanding arbors in a variety of sizes
(please see the Dunham Size Chart below)
to locate and chuck work from the inside diameter of the work piece for operations such as turning, grinding, milling and drilling using existing machine tools and fixtures.
The straight shank of the Dunham Expanding Mandrel is chucked in a collet, jaw chuck, vise or special fixture. The tapered Drawbolt (expansion bolt) is manually rotated with a hex wrench to expand (or release) the work piece. To machine the Dunham Expanding Mandrel for your work piece, the Drawbolt is rotated until the Mandrel expands 0.005", and then the machineable slotted diameter is machined to a diameter 0.001" - 0.002" larger than the bore diameter of the work piece. Complete machining instructions are provided to prepare the Dunham Expanding Mandrel for holding your work piece.

We manufacture Dunham Expanding Mandrels in 8 standard sizes (please see the Dunham Size Chart below) to accommodate work piece diameters ranging from 5/16" to 6" and work piece lengths up to 2". Please note that the 'milled flat' is no longer required or provided. Again, Dunham Mandrels are designed to be 'finish machined' by the end user on their machine(s), assuring that the Dunham Expanding Mandrel is optimally matched by the customer for maximum concentricity or accuracy relative to the customer's spindle, jaw chuck or other fixture. While 'finish machining' by the end user yields maximum accuracies (and cost savings), Dunham will also machine the Mandrel to the customer's specifications for an additional charge.
Dunham Expanding Collets and Mandrels were originally designed in 1958 by our founder, Russell Dunham, and we were awarded a patent for the designs in 1959.
