Planning For $15
A friend of mine in Fresno who owns a growing, vibrant small business, just wrote something on Facebook that really hit home. This comes after he made very clear his opposition to the wage increase in a post earlier this week. In fact, the message that I had been planning on sharing with you has been set aside, and I've re-written it based on his comment. He said:
"STAY PROFITABLE. STAY IN BUSINESS. Listen, my California business brethren. The $15/hr minimum wage is a forgone conclusion. Get ready for it, and do what you must to stay profitable. Don't complain, don't cry, don't yell into a vacuum cleaner. Plan your new pricing structure NOW. Create your new staffing plan NOW. Plan for decreased morale NOW and do what you must. Hell, charge lawmakers double if you have to, or just flat out refuse them service. But whatever you do, for yourselves and your own families, STAY PROFITABLE and STAY IN BUSINESS!"

Chamber/VSB/EVT Join Forces to Promote More Air Service
|
Working with the Santa Barbara Airport and its Director Hazel Johns, leadership from the Chamber, Visit Santa Barbara and the Economic Vitality Team have teamed up to help increase air service out of SBA. The groups, along with other public and private partners, are working to build a fund of $1 million which will be used to guarantee revenues on new air routes out of
SBA.
The concept is a simple one, and one that has been used successfully at other small and mid-sized airports around the country. The idea is to create the fund, then work with airlines on new routes that they believe will work. The fund is then made available to guarantee the route is profitable, and is only used if monthly numbers indicate the airline is not making money. In most places where this program has been created, the fund has not been tapped as the route was profitable without the additional subsidy.
If you are interested in finding out more about how we're trying to give you more destinations from SBA, give us a call! Ken Oplinger can be reached at 965-3023, or via email at [email protected].

Ambassador of the Month
|
My name is Cameron and I have had the pleasure of living and working here in Santa Barbara for the past 15 years. I have been employed the entire time by a fantastic company called DocuProducts which is the largest local distributor of Canon copiers, printers and scanners. With over 100+ local references, I pride myself on honesty, transparency and the technical abilities I bring to the table. I have been told on numerous occasions that these traits are the main reasons my clients return for future business. They trust that I will advise them to the most cost-effective solutions and services available in my ever evolving industry. In addition, I have been a Santa Barbara Chamber Ambassador for over a decade, helping members receive the most out of the membership along with meeting great people and attending a lot of the city networking events.
I also enjoy giving back to our community. DocuProducts and I have been a part of and helped many non-profits in our community fundraise and spread the good word about the wonderful things they do here in SB.
I have a beautiful wife and two little girls, ages 4 years and 9 months who are the pride of my life. As a family we love to do outdoor activities such as long walks on the beach, trips to the zoo and even a swim in the ocean now and again. I enjoy playing music, walking my dog and diving when I have free time, however free time is becoming a bit more challenging to find now days. I love working and playing here in our beautiful community and I look forward to many fantastic years to come!

Mastering Change - Introduction to Organizational Therapy
(Revised and Updated Edition)
by Dr. Ichak Kalderon Adizes
Over forty-plus years, Dr. Adizes has developed a theory about how to lead change that has helped hundreds of companies of all sizes around the world. Since the release of the first edition, he has lectured to more than 100,000 executives, and much of what he has learned during this time has been incorporated into this new release. In addition, Universities have started teaching Adizes, and a companion manual for instructors has been developed.
Read this book and get answers to the following questions:
- What is the underlying reason why problems or opportunities emerge with change?
- Is there a system for how to manage change that actually works?
- What does it mean that good management is democracy in decision making and dictatorship in implementation?
- How do I turn destructive conflict into constructive conflict?
- As a manager, how do I distinguish the right problem and solution from the wrong one?
- The managerial process is too complicated for any single individual to perform alone, so how do I create a complementary team?
- How do you manage an organization with Mutual Trust and Respect?
Cabrillo Boulevard Bridge Replacement
Project Update: April 2016
Crews have finished up the mountain-side of the new Cabrillo Boulevard Bridge, and utility companies are finishing up relocating utilities to the temporary pedestrian bridge. Traffic will shift on to the new mountain-side of the bridge on the night of Monday, April 11, 2016 with work occurring from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am. During the shift of traffic lanes, Cabrillo Boulevard will have alternating closures with a full closure when concrete barrier is moved between State and Anacapa Streets with traffic detoured along Castillo, Montecito, Yanonali, and Garden Streets. After the traffic switch, the temporary pedestrian bridge will also be open for use in the beach park.
