President's Message

Are We Really Leaders in Public Process?

Santa Barbara is known for many things. Beautiful Beaches. Stunning Mountains. World Class Restaurants.

And a very active and engaged public.

In fact, the level of public involvement we have in our community is one of the great things about Santa Barbara. We keep track of the issues affecting our community, and we provide our input on those issues in the hope of making positive changes.

Ambassador of the Month

Yvonne Parsons of OsteoStrong Santa Barbara

Yvonne Parsons is the owner of OsteoStrong Santa Barbara, an up and coming wellness franchise designed specifically for people with health issues stemming from osteoporosis.  Half of all women and a third of all men over 50 have osteoporosis, which is also the third leading cause of death after 65.  Parsons previously owned the very successful Curves franchises in Santa Barbara and went on to become the Director of International Operations in Australasia with a territory covering New Zealand, Australia, Africa, Israel, Kuwait and China for the Corporate office.

She holds a Juris Doctorate and practiced law for many years.  Her roots in Santa Barbara began in 1974 when she became the first female radio announcer at KTMS radio after her stint as a broadcast journalist in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany.  She went on to become an international award winning documentary filmmaker with films being shown on PBS and around the world. Being involved in business seems a natural for her, as her maiden name AMOS is an acronym for business: Accounting, Marketing, Operations, and Sales.  She believes a successful business incorporates all these areas with the end point always being to have great employee relationships and excellent customer service.

She also believes in giving back to the community and OsteoStrong provided over 1,000 free bone scans to low income and senior residents last year, totaling nearly $250,000 in free scans. She is also the Regional Sales Director for OsteoStrong and is in the process of awarding franchises to business owners who want to develop a long lasting business that makes a difference in people's lives.

Cabrillo Boulevard Bridge Replacement

SoCalGas will work on gas utilities between 9:00 pm and 6:00 am on Monday, February 29th.

Upcoming work:
Throughout March, crews will finish up underground utilities, sidewalks, and roadway paving on the mountain side of the new bridge.  Utility relocations in the park will continue with work by Southern California Gas Company and Verizon throughout the month.  Utilities will be temporarily relocated to the temporary pedestrian bridge in preparation for the beach side replacement of the Cabrillo Boulevard Bridge.   Some nighttime work may occur and temporary detours of the beach multipurpose paths will continue.
Near the end of March, crews will shift traffic onto the new mountain side of the bridge and begin construction activities on the beach side.  Night work and closures will occur as needed to move equipment and concrete safety barrier for Stage 3 construction.   With the shift to Stage 3, Helena Avenue will reopen to vehicles at Cabrillo Boulevard.

Closures:
Throughout Stage 2, the mountain side of Cabrillo Boulevard will remain closed near the bridge.  One lane in each direction remains open during daytime construction.  Helena Avenue is closed to vehicles at Cabrillo Boulevard with access remaining for pedestrians, bikes, and segways.

To accommodate the work area, the left turn lane from westbound Cabrillo Boulevard to Stearns Wharf is closed.  Motorists can enter Stearns Wharf from State Street and eastbound Cabrillo Boulevard.  Detour signs are in place to highlight access around the closures.

Fall 2014 - Spring 2017:
The Cabrillo Boulevard Bridge Replacement Project includes a new bridge, enhanced Mission Creek banks, and improved pedestrian areas.  Cabrillo Boulevard, surrounding businesses, parks, Stearns Wharf, and the Arts and Crafts Show will remain open throughout construction.

The Economic Vitality Team of Santa Barbara County (EVT) was honored by theWestern Association of Chamber Executives (WACE) on Feb. 4 at the organization'sannual conference in San Francisco in the category of building a strong local economy.

Area businesses and churches are cautioned against scammers posing as fire inspectors and demanding up-front payment for their services, said a Friday public service announcement from the county's fire departments. In the past several weeks, business owners say they've received visits from individuals claiming to be with the fire department and ready to perform an inspection or survey.

It was a very weird end to a very long night. After nearly six hours of detailed, inspired, exhausting, and mostly high-minded public policy debate over a brand- new citywide Bicycle Master Plan, the Santa Barbara City Council appeared to bestow its blessing-by a 5-2 vote- on not just the plan itself but also on the intensely controversial proposal to remove up to 100 on-street parking spaces from a four-block stretch of Micheltorena Street.
