Community Matters e-News

Sharing the power of compassion and connection

June/July 2014

This month's e-news is departure from the one-topic issues of late. It is full of short juicy "summer reading" stories about Community Foundation people, connections, and grants. Spread the good word and enjoy.

You'N-I Connection Leads to Jobs for Former Foster Youth
CFWN Advisory Board member Nancy Rodriguez wants to connect with job applicants through You'N-I
Advisory Board member Nancy Rodriguez learned during a Program Committee site visit that a monumental challenge for an aging-out foster youth is getting a job. Nancy has been participating with the Foundation's You'N-I (Youth Network Initiative) and understands the gravity of the problem in our area. She also happens to be the head of Human Resources for Nature Made Bakery and is busy recruiting for new entry level positions. Putting two and two together,
Nancy talked with Sierra Association of Foster Families Director Joseph Galata and the good news is fast spreading. See You'N-I facebook page for details.

Choir Member Makes Wise Gift to Church.
Rachel Struve-Mould's Gift Annuity Grew to Give More..
Rachel Struve-Mould, a former Reno school teacher, was a member of the Lutheran Church of Good Shepherd choir for 50 years. Through a Charitable Gift Annuity with the Community Foundation, she was able to support her beloved parish each year and give to the church endowment upon her passing.

In 2003 Rachel invested with the Community Foundation to establish a $25,000 Charitable Gift Annuity.

She received a charitable tax deduction for the charitable portion of her gift that year. Soon she began receiving quarterly annuity checks, which she generously passed on to her church. (Many donors use the quarterly checks as income for themselves or a family member.)

In March 2014, at age 99,  Rachel passed away. As agreed upon ten years earlier, the Foundation transferred the residual of her annuity to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Endowment just as Rachel directed.

Rachel's foresight and generosity is an example of how working with the Community Foundation can help make the most of charitable gifts. One well-planned gift grew and helped our community in several ways:
  1. Rachel's charitable gift deduction in the she established the charitable gift annuity reduced her tax tax burden in that year, giving her more money in her pocket.
  2. The church building fund through regular quarterly gifts totaling $26,500.
  3. The Community Foundation through the annuity's management fees totaling $3,320.
  4. The residual of the gift annuity that was donated to the church endowment fund at the Community Foundation and will be funding Church needs for generations.

The value of Rachel's original gift grew from $25,000 to $32,515 plus the taxes Rachel saved due to her gift deduction.

The You'N-I Steering committee is excited to go live with the database as a website and link in early September. Food, shelter, housing, and jobs are just a few of the numerous basic terms that can be researched. Users will be connected to service providers in our area.
