Imaginative Grant Makes Small Community Safer

Maurice White - Young Man Building a Lasting Legacy
"I soon learned  you can't fish 7 days a week."

"So many people don't realize how much good they can do even if they don't have a lot of money. You don't have to be rich to give. Some people don't even give $20 because they don't believe it will make a difference I disagree. It is just not that big a deal. Give what you can and enjoy it."

White was barefoot and casually dressed in jeans and a Hawaiian shirt when met me on the steps of modest home. He was born in 1958 and raised on the same Carson City property where he has lived his entire life. He worked as an auto and marine mechanic, a heavy equipment mechanic, and as a machinist before deciding to devote his life to public service and fishing. Read more.

Unusual Grant Pays for 911 Signs

It is fun for Community Foundation staff to see unusual and interesting grant requests come across their desks.

This recent example is a grant that paid for 911 signs and installation materials for the residents of a private homeowners association. Residents of this small Oklahoma community live in an area with no street lights and very little money to spare. A donor heard of several incidents where residents had suffered because emergency services were unable to find their homes in an emergency. The County was unable to help fund buying 911 signs because of budget constraints and a perceived conflict from using County money to put signs on privately owned land. The donor approached the Foundation to see if we could help. Shortly afterward, the grant was mailed and the signs installed.

The emergency services are happy that they now can easily find their way through the 93 properties in a timely manner. The residents are delighted and feel more secure.  We are glad to help our fundholder make this little community a safer place.

Note-able Music Therapy Endowment --

Something to Sing About

By Manal Toppozada,MA, MT-BC/L Executive Director

Note-Able Music Therapy Services is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year! Over the past decade, our focus has been on providing the best services possible to as many individuals as possible. That will always be our number one priority, but with ten years behind us, our perspective has changed.

Now is the time to look to the future. We see the lives that are affected -- for the better -- and we want to ensure that the musical opportunities offered by NMTS are available for as long as there is a need in our community.

I'm proud to announce that we have established an endowment through the Community Foundation of Western Nevada to guarantee that inclusive music programs and music therapy services will be available in our community for many years to come.

The mission of Note-Able Music Therapy Services is to create lasting change in the lives of people of all abilities through music. By supporting the NMTS endowment, you will guarantee that children and adults - no matter their age or ability - will always have a place where they can learn, grow, and experience a community that is connected through the love of music.
