Exceptional Daryle Lee Wins Two Scholarships
Daryle Lee
Daryle Lee will attend UNR School of Engineering.

The selection committees of both the NV Energy Powerful Partnerships Scholarship and the Elizabeth Bowker Women in Engineering Scholarship chose Reno High School Student, Daryle Lee as a scholarship winner.

What made this young woman, raised by her father, stand out from the rest? Why did two different committees looking for different criteria pick her?

Daryle's grades, like the majority of applicants are excellent. What makes her different is that as a high school senior-- when many of here classmates are coasting in easy classes, she is pushing through Honors classes in Physics and Earth Science, and Advanced Placement classes in English, US Government, Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus.

Daryle's list of community service activities is impressive. What really impressed the selection committees is how she recognized her personal growth as a consequence of her generosity:

"Community Service has taught me compassion. My most memorable volunteer activity was helping the Note-Ables Music Therapy get ready for Noodles and Notes. We practiced for a month and a half, putting in extra hours during the week to be prepared for the event. Seeing people volunteer their time and dedicate themselves is an inspirational sight. I experienced being part of an environment where people are 100% dedicated to what they do because it is their passion. It touched me, it made me feel small. I was able to let my trivial concerns vanish. I continue to volunteer with them because of the inspiration they provide."

Finally, Daryle is a standout because she made the effort to recognize her abilities and mindset and then found a career to make the most of them. She will be entering the University of Nevada, Reno in the fall, majoring in engineering: "I am choosing engineering as my career ...it is essentially the perfect combination of technicality and creativity and the fact that I will be contributing to society makes it all the more fulfilling."

Fast Five with a Fundholder - Jim Nichols

Jim Nichols
Jim Nichols and his wife Jane have been
fundholders since 2003.
Upon his return from a trip to Australia, TMCC engineering professor Jim Nichols walked into our office to make a grant request. Often grant requests are managed online, but we love seeing fundholders like Jim, who enjoy the personal touch. I took advantage of this visit to ask him a few questions about his philanthropy.

1. What do you support?
     The Arts.

2.
Why do you partner with the Community Foundation for your giving?
Our donor advised fund is a good option for us. It gives us flexibility
    with
our gift timing and the variety of organizations we support.

3. What inspires you to give?
Artists are the keepers of civilization. The economy is tough and
nonprofit agencies are having a hard time with more to serve.
     We want to help.

4. What was your first act of philanthropy?
Probably in church as a child. My social conscience came with my
     marriage to Jane.

5. What is your hope for Nevada?
I hope it will be a place for my granchildren, everybody's
grandchildren to grow up in and enjoy a quality life.
