Family Sees Scholarship Gift Multiply likes Loaves and Fishes

Three of the 68 scholarship recipients whose lives were changed.
An endowment gift can keep on growing and giving;
endlessly awarding annual scholarships.

Ten years ago Phil and Jennifer Satre gave the Community Foundation
an  astonishingly generous gift of $1 million to begin a scholarship endowment.

Since that time 68 students from all walks of life and from different cities and small towns near Caesar's Entertainment Properties throughout the U.S. have been given a big four-year boon for their college tuitions.

Nearly $700,000 dollars from the Satre Scholarship fund has been used for scholarships to universities that include Yale, Loyola Marymount, Stanford, U.Wisconsin, UCLA, M.I.T., Rutgers, U of Missouri, U of Illinois, U of Louisiana, Purdue, Boston College, Amherst, Penn State, Cornell, UNLV and UNR.

The wonderful news is that the scholarship fund is not depleting. Not at all!  Granting every year, the fund has still managed to grow to $1. 2 million.

Scholarship winners are picked by a dedicated committee that has met throughout the ten years. Their interest in the student's education is real and lasting. They look forward to updates and checking in with the students throughout their college years and afterward.  Most of the  scholarship winners are children of wage and tip earners athe Caesar's properties, and many are first generation citizens. These brilliant and highest achieving students will be the leaders of their communities in coming years.

"Thank you for your contribution to not only my education but to education in general by creating this scholarship. After I graduate MIT this June, I plan to continue my studies and pursue a PhD in Chemical Biology." Rocco Policarpo, scholarship recipient.

As long as there are very bright students who work hard enough to be accepted into great schools, there will be money in an endowed scholarship fund to help them along at the Community Foundation of Western Nevada.

Bridges to a Thriving Nevada
A recommendation from Tracy Turner

Community Foundation Program Associate, Dani Lutzow, went to the Bridges Day 1 training this week.

Her wide eyes and comments following the training made me think "we need to get the word out about this." Are you aware of Bridges?

I've been involved with the initiative for the last 5 years, and I'm on the steering committee for it. I, too, went through the Day 1 training-and so did my husband.

All nonprofits in our region would benefit from the Day 1 training-just to get an overview of what life in poverty is like.

Before you say "oh, I know about it from our clients"
let me say that I thought I knew; in reality I didn't have a clue.

As a service provider, going through the training can transform one's way of thinking-and may change models of doing business. Sheri Rice at Access to Healthcare Network has had all of her case workers trained in Bridges and it is, from what I hear, changing the way her staff and clients work together-for the good.

Deb McDermed and Laurie Martin (Food Bank) are the key people to talk with about Bridges; Deb's phone number is on the attached Bridges Reno flyer. They can explain it much better than I can, though I'm happy to go on at length! I've attached the Bridges Reno Flyer and the Train the Trainer flyer (dates for Train the Trainer have been moved to June 17-19.

I suggest that at least two key people from each nonprofit in our region go to Day 1 training to get an overview of the Bridges framework.

Then see how implementing the framework may affect how your organization interacts with your clients. If you see value, send folks to the Train the Trainer session. Day 1 trainings are held monthly and have been at United Way; Day 2 trainings are also available and important to implement the Bridges framework in your organization. They are free and well worth the time invested. The Train the Trainer program has a cost associated with it, but at least do Day 1 before you make any decisions about Bridges.

The attached Bridges Reno flyer is the Day 1 flyer. You can contact Leslie (775-636-4209 ) to register for the March 21 training. Again, this will be well worth the time you invest.
