Scholarship Season is Here.
 | |
Find the right scholarship for your on the nevadafund.org Scholarship Match page. |
Applications for the majority of the the Foundation's three dozen scholarships are due February 28, 2013. Students can link to applications at the Community Foundation's website, www.nevadafund.org.
The Community Foundation of Western Nevada administers scholarships established by families to honor loved ones, corporations and private foundations.
Program Associate, Dani Lutzow said," The Community Foundation Scholarship program is one of a kind in northern Nevada because it offers such a wide array of scholarships to a diverse group of students. In some cases, scholarships are given to the students who are not "A" students and rarely considered. There are scholarships for high school athletes, scholarships to help re-entry women, graduate students and even a scholarship for preschool tuition."
Students should look at the Scholarship Match page on the Foundation's website: nevadafund.org to find scholarships that match their academic interests.
Scholarships reflect the values of the people and businesses that funded them.
The last two years of scholarships from the Hispanic Heritage Nursing Scholarship have been funded by an anonymous donor. This scholarship has helped several students each year pay for nursing school at TMCC or UNR.

Anna Ressell, Wooster High graduate and Kennedy Scholarship winner is attending Brown University. |
The Northern Nevada Youth Scholarship supports
students who will not qualify for other scholarships based on G.P.A., but demonstrate commitment, passion, and drive. This student will not be eligible for high G.P.A. scholarships, or the Millennium scholarship and has shown a renewed dedication to their studies and increased their G.P.A. over their junior and senior year.
The Kennedy Foundation scholarship hopes to make it possible for parent's to say "YES!" when their hard-working, high achieving student is accepted into one of the best universities in the nation.
The NV Energy Powerful Partnership scholarships reward community service and leadership qualities, as well as scholastic endeavors.
For more information about the scholarship programs at the Community Foundation of Western Nevada students should call Dani Lutzow, Program Associate at 775-333-5499.

| | Do you have a bright idea for a local business? |
Wanted: Entrepreneurs.
Needed: Great Business Plan for a small business in Reno or Sparks.
Starting immediately, the Reno Rebuild Project Fund is accepting applications for its first small-business loan. The Reno Rebuild Project has been growing this fund, nickel by nickel, since the Fund's inception in May 2012. Applications will be accepted through March 15, 2013, and can be found on the Community Foundation website.
The Reno Rebuild Fund, administered by the Community Foundation of Western Nevada, was designed specifically with future small business owners in mind. The creators of this fund - Michael Connolly, Chris Kahl and Zachary Cage - are small business owners themselves and hope to encourage a non-franchise, entrepreneurial growth in their community.
By donating $.05 from every sale at each of their four local businesses - Legend's Grill, Sports & Spirits, Sierra Tap House, Ole Bridge Pub and The Brewer's Cabinet - they hope to award an applicant each year with a low-interest loan. The competitive selection process will be administered by the Community Foundation of Western Nevada, and will include application review and applicant interviews conducted by the Advisory Committee, as well as community voting.
The entire selection process will be covered by SoSu.TV, a partner of the Reno Rebuild Project, who will pair the winner of the Reno Rebuild Fund loan with a mentor and document their journey.
For application questions, please contact Tracy Turner, Community Foundation of Western Nevada, at TTurner@cfwnv.org. |
Parks and Cultural Art Fund Shines through Reno Star.

The Parks and Cultural Arts fund was established in 2006 to enliven Reno's public spaces. It has accomplished its mission as a bare corner of a busy intersection has indeed been enlivened, with a grant to help install the Reno Star.
The Reno Star Cosmic Thistle stands 46' tall and 60' wide. Made from repurposed salvaged steel from the city of Reno, it's design was inspired by the idea of ripping structural steel box-beams lengthwise and utilizing their inherent internal tension to emulate the natural arcing properties of the high desert plants found in the Great Basin.
You can enjoy the Reno Star on the northwest corner of McCarran and South Virginia. Learn more on the Reno Star Facebook page. |

| | Learning to ski is a rite of passage for many Renoites. |
You and perhaps your family before you built a life in this part of the country, east of the Sierras.
Now you have a chance to sustain the community you love and keep it thriving for those who come after you.
Leave at least 5% of your estate to the Community Fund. It is easy to do and will make a world of difference to your children's children.
Call Chris Askin, 775-333-5499 to talk about making a bequest to the Community Foundation. It is a gift of a lifetime.
