Couple with Zest for Life Boost College-Bound Nevadans
| |
Stegelmeyers hiking in Alaska |
Eugene Stegelmeyer, a middle school teacher and his wife Nadine, a librarian, lived long lives enjoying Nevada, traveling, and exploring the world in a VW bus. Eugene and Nadine were both born in 1917, just months apart-in June and August. They met when they were 2 years old and living in Granite City, Illinois. They were childhood playmates and later, husband and wife.
The couple never had children and left 80% of their estate to the Community Foundation to establish scholarships for students majoring in education or geriatrics.
 | |
One look at Nadine Segelmeyer's face will tell you how meaningful it was to help Shelby Fowlkes attend the University of Nevada, Reno. |
Nadine was referred to the Community Foundation by her financial advisor, Andrea Knapp. Because of that referral, Nadine was able to joyfully participate in a life changing gift and generations of students will recieve a boost from the estate of two vibrant, imaginative and caring people.
Nadine outlived Eugene by nine years. Towards the end of her life she decided she wanted to participate in giving scholarships during her lifetime. She funded an annual scholarship, the second of which was given to Shelby Fowlkes in 2011. Tracy Turner, Foundation Program Officer, arranged for Shelby and Nadine to meet at Nadine's assisted living apartment in Sparks.
Nadine Stegelmeyer died early in 2012, but her legacy lives on through good work the "Stegelemeyer students" accomplish improving lives on either end of the life spectrum in the fields of geriatrics and education.

Robyn Ballentyne's House Funds Preschool Tuition for
Generations of Children.
 | |
Robyn S. Ballentyne believed in the limitless potential of the human mind. |
Robin Ballentyne's abiding passion was the love of learning and intellectual growth. He believed young children have unlimited potential that is not nurtured by today's television society and education system. To do what he could to promote childhood development, Robin established the Read with Me Foundation at the Community Foundation of Western Nevada in 2003.
Through this foundation, Robin funded scholarships to pay the tuition to academic pre-schools for bright youngsters from families with financial need.
It is satisfying and lots of fun for the Foundation staff to meet the
children and see the last 8 years of preschool scholars grow up at the annual Read With Me reunion each summer. Robyn enjoyed the reunion and would personally furnish the pizza and rootbeer while Chris Askin, President and CEO of the Community Foundation led the group in a game of "Duck Duck GOOSE!"
Robyn died in February 2012.
| |
A thank you card from a grateful mother. |
He left his house to the Community Foundation to sell and fund this scholarship as a permanent endowment.
The Read with Me Foundation is his unending legacy, improving the lives of young children in Reno for generations to come. Through his foundation, one man acting on his best nature changed the world for the better.

Geneva Springmeyer Dedicated her Estate to Help Women Preserve their Independence.
| |
Geneva Springmeyer expressed her life's values through the Jeff and Geneva Charitable Foundation |
Geneva Springmeyer was introduced to the Community Foundation in 2010 through her hospice counselor. An entrepreneur and former owner of a secretarial service, Geneva was a fiercely independent person. She lived the life she wanted to live under her own terms, until her death in April 2012. Her independent attitude has become her charitable legacy.
Geneva Springmeyer used her home and rental property, through a bequest to the Community Foundation of Western Nevada, to create a charitable foundation. Her estate is in the process of being settled and, when it is, the community of Carson City will be enriched.
Under her specific direction, the primary grantees of this foundation will be organizations in the Carson City area that help elderly women remain
their own homes as long as possible.
Recognizing that nursing care is an inevitable and needed option for women with Alzheimer's disease, Geneva wrote in her agreement that the Springmeyer Foundation will make grants to help nonprofits that care for Alzheimer's patients in a home-like small group setting.
We respect Geneva Springmeyer's unique take on life and will honor her charitable intentions for generations. |
