Security Sales & Intergration

By Scott Goldfine

Many companies - installing security and fire system contractors among them - will answer yes (particularly salespeople) to seemingly any inquiry about goods or services. Commercial or residential security? Absolutely! Fire alarm? You bet! Fire sprinklers? Of course! Emergency lighting? Our specialty! Fire extinguishers? Without question! Kitchen fire suppression? Count on it! Communication systems? We're the experts! No one's better! Foot massages? Um, well you get the picture. Some providers will say just about anything to get the business, but few can actually deliver such scope. However, there is at least one company whose portfolio includes everything mentioned above and more, a true single-source provider: Koorsen Fire & Security.

Founded in Indianapolis in 1946, the third-generation, family-owned Koorsen Fire & Security has become one of North America's industry's largest and most respected dealers with annual sales exceeding $80 million. Its more than 20 locations and staff of nearly 700 enable the firm to design, install, engineer, program, service and repair virtually all fire and security products - a rarity indeed. About the only things Koorsen outsources are monitoring to Criticom Monitoring Services (CMS) and systems integration to the division it launched in 2003 and spun out as its own entity in 2010, Koorsen Security Technology.

New NAFED President Introduces Himself

By Ed Hugill
President of NAFED
Firewatch!
June 2014

My Story

I can truly say I am very proud and excited about the opportunity to serve as the NAFED president for the next two years. I love the fire protection industry, and I am passionate about using my term to do whatever I can to make NAFED more relevant and even stronger than its memorable past. My board involvement started in 2009 when serving as a director-at-large; then I moved into the executive committee, serving first as treasurer and in the past year as president-elect. I have been involved in the conference committee almost every year since joining the board in 2009.

BTP Moves Closer to Aviation 1211 Replacement

The development of BTP (2-bromo-3,3-triflouropropene) as a replacement for halon 1211 in commercial aviation hand held fire extinguishers is progressing.

A joint venture between Boeing and American Pacific, the manufacturer of Halotron, BTP is being called an environmentally acceptable halon 1211 replacement for use on commercial passenger and freighter aircraft.

Two New Recipients Receive NAFED Awards

5/23/14
NAFED News

Chicago, IL -- The National Association of Fire Equipment Distributors (NAFED) presented two awards to outstanding individuals during its 2014 conference season.

The Founders Award, which recognizes individuals making outstanding contributions to the association, was presented to Larry Angle, president of M. Jacks Fire & Safety in San Antonio, Texas. Angle has served NAFED with two terms as region five director and as president in 2006-08. In addition to serving on the board, he represents NAFED on the NFPA 17A committee. Angle is active in his state, serving as president of the Fire Equipment Distributors of Texas (FEDOT) from 1997 to 2002 and currently serving as treasurer.

The Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes an individual for their personal impact and service to the fire protection industry as a whole, was awarded to Bill Beyer, president of Amerex Corporation based out of Trussville, Alabama. Beyer has been involved with the fire equipment industry for over 20 years. He has led his employees by example while guiding the company to a three-fold increase in revenue. His "open door" policy extends to his customers, not just his employees. He is a firm believer in the benefits of trade associations, and whenever NAFED, FEMA, or a state distributor association needs help he has been there to offer support. Beyer has had a positive influence on the fire equipment industry at many levels and has helped to create a positive impression of the industry.

Photos of the recipients receiving their awards are available here.
