Camera Operator of the Year: Feature Film: Mitch Dubin, SOC - "Lincoln" Television: Andrew Voegeli, SOC - "Breaking Bad" The event has its own soul now. Our audience knows what to expect: Superior fellowship within a comfortable yet elegant setting, sumptuous food, plenty of drink, an exciting lineup of inspiring speakers who pull at the heart strings and make us all feel proud to be a part of such a magnificent undertaking. Most importantly, it is the recognition of the humble workers behind the scenes with an elegance and grace that makes it a very significant evening in the lives of these honorees.

The SOC awards event is a night of appreciation, celebration and recognition of professional accomplishment. One of the favorite parts of the evening - and what is truly the capstone of our recognition - is when the lights go out and we watch the work of our honored colleagues on the big screen. This element is precisely why we are gathered, why we love to go to a theater to experience cinema and why we do what we do for a living. Consider now the reason for the success of this element of the show - the accomplishments of editor Bob Joyce and his team to make these true "screen gems" come to life. Bob has dedicated himself to these films like no one else and the audience have little or no idea of the hours and hours he spent crafting these films which, to this date, have been technically pure and free of a single glitch or missed frame. His work is flawless and he gets my vote for Awards show VIP. It certainly was the most enjoyable one for me because I was able to totally rely on Associate Awards Producer Denis Moran, SOC who looked after all of the nuts and bolts of the mechanical aspects of the event. That was a major burden lifted from me and I am hugely appreciative of his efforts and friendly, humorous and dedicated camaraderie. ![](http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs122/1102848091884/img/929.jpg?a=1113635652983) | Rochelle Brown and Brad Greenspan | Continued from last year's precedent we did a live web cast of the awards event. This went exceptionally well because of SOC Associate Brad Greenspan's efforts. He started gathering the Teradek Cube and testing months prior and was absolutely as ready as one could be on show night. We heard from watchers in NY, Texas and the U.K. that the signal was high quality and uninterrupted. Technical Achievement Awards chair Dave Emmerichs, SOC handled the extensive Technical Awards nominations procedure, the blue ribbon panel experts and finally organizing the recipients material for print and screen. Both of the recipients, Canon for the C-300 and C-500 cameras and Dave Eubank for his pCAM Film+Digital Calculator were honored. Canon supported the event with a ten thousand dollar donation. Their partner in data recording, AJA also gave ten thousand dollars. A great demonstration of support! The SOC welcomes AJA and Canon as Corporate members. SOC Associate Rochelle Brown, for the second year, met the challenge of administering the demanding Camera Operator of ![](http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs122/1102848091884/img/937.jpg?a=1113635652983) | David Frederick, SOC lines up a camera.
| the Year contest. Starting in summer with calls for nominations and then submissions, blue ribbon panel nomination decisions and then the contacts. That's ten busy camera operators! Not easy to gather elements for the web, the magazine, the program book, screeners, Q&As ... It's a whirlwind of activity and Rochelle says, "OK, I got it" that gets it done. ![](http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs122/1102848091884/img/910.jpg?a=1113635652983) A long tradition of extraordinary effort needs acknowledgment. With gratitude from the SOC, we appreciate the tireless efforts of SOC Editor in Chief and Publisher Lynn Lanning. Like Bob Joyce, Lynn stays the course heading for the utopia of printed perfection as it applies to our treasured Awards Event Tribute Program Book. It is not only the most accurate compendium of the accomplishments of the honorees, presenters and participants it is an artful appreciation of photography. The deliberation and careful choices of images show the wealth of Lynn's knowledge of our craft and passion. Lynn also knows the hard facts of advertising qualms and quibbles so she endeavors to match up sponsors with images to make everyone happy. ![](http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs122/1102848091884/img/930.jpg?a=1113635652983) | Governors Award recipient Penny Marshall with SOC President Chris Tufty |
The beautiful invitation this year was designed by Elke Weiss, also designing the new Cammy Award vertical banners. She created the 3-D CGI Cammy. These two banners add elegance and branding to the event. Douglas Knapp, SOC painstakingly supervised the Cammy Trophy and Plaque production as well as printing and mailing out the invitations. Continuing for his fifth year behind the camera and lighting of the Award recipient interviews and Camera Operator Q&A is Bob Fisher. Bob also filmed the behind the scenes at the awards with the Canon C300. He has become the SOC documentarian. He did an absolutely beautiful job with Kyra's interview session in President Tufty's home. Assisting Bob is Associate member Kimberly Palmer. Both Bob and Kim worked with me on the Vision Center film. No event can happen without it costing something and subsequently being paid for. Dan Turrett, SOC, Treasurer, was amazing in the necessary short term turn around vendor payments needed. Invoices flying in, payments flying out. Our newly appointed SOC Sponsorship director Dan Dodd and his team of power cash grabbers were intrepid in the effort of securing our sponsorship dollars. It was a successful step for us having Ingle Dodd Media handle our sponsorships. Distinguished Service Lifetime Honoree, 2009, Larry Parker of Mole Richardson helped light the theater interior with a 2k backlight to the audience, the courtyard patio party area and the step and repeat banner press area. ![](http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs122/1102848091884/img/933.jpg?a=1113635652983) | Colin Farrell introduces Bruce MacCallum, SOC

The SOC, in its capacity as supporter of the Vision Center at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, held its second Still Photography Silent Auction. Jennifer Braddock and Lynn Lanning worked with Diana Penilla of the WB Studio Photo Lab to create a dozen beautiful mounted enlargements of Still Photographer Lifetime Achievement Honoree Melissa Moseley's work. SOC media manager Liz Radley, SOC, is editing the 2013 show, combining the behind the scenes from Bob Fisher and the Barber boom, Steadi pod and the Kate Rhees Davies red carpet honoree interviews. Plans for next awards: the red carpet show to have a proper producer as a live sponsored webcast. The 2013 awards DVD will be available soon. The 2011 DVD will follow. The 2012 DVD is available now. Thanks also to all the folks and their hard work that I ran out of room to mention. I am grateful and we know that it's a thoughtful collaborative effort and I am honored to lead that precious effort.
