Greetings!

Welcome to the Summer 2013 issue of the SOC Newsletter.

We had an amazing Lifetime Achievement Awards in March. Some say it was the best awards event of the season. Congratulations to Executive Awards Event Producer David Frederick, SOC, Associate Awards Producer Denis Moran, SOC and all the volunteers that participated in this year's incredible celebration.

Historical Plaque Presented
Mole Richardson Company honored

The SOC recently presented this historical plaque commemorating the site of the Mole Richardson Company established in 1927. Douglas Knapp, SOC made the presentation  for former SOC President Mike Frediani.

Mole Presentation
Larry Parker and Michael Parker (L to R) receive the SOC Historical Marker Award from
SOC Governor Douglas Knapp.

On behalf of Historical Committee Chair, Georgia Packard and Mike Frediani,  we thank you all for attending the Society of Camera Operators' presentation of our Historical Marker Award.

Our first such presentation took place at Cottage Grove, Oregon to designate the location of the great silent film The General starring Buster Keaton.

Our second presentation, in partnership with the Hollywood Heritage Foundation, placed a plaque in

the Silver Lake area commemorating the filming location of Laurel & Hardy's classic movie

The Music Box.

Last year as president of the SOC, Michael Frediani decided to resurrect the Historical Plaque Program. His first choice was the Mole Richardson Company.

Right here in this building Mike spent 4 years in film school when this was the location of

Columbia College-Hollywood.

He says: "Here is where I dreamed of someday landing a career in the TV & Motion Picture Industry.

I recall going on a field trip across the street to see where lights were still being manufactured

since the 1920's. I never forgot that."

Mike continues: "I truly wish we could join all of you to personally present this beautiful bronze plaque, but both Georgia and I are operating cameras on sets today."

Mole plaque

"I have designated Douglas Knapp with the privilege of presenting our Historical Marker

to the Mole-Richardson Company, and we congratulate Larry & Michael Parker for their

continued accomplishments."

Sincerely,

Michael Frediani, SOC

Election Results Are In

The newly elected 2013-14 Board of Governors of the SOC consists of:

Active Members:

Mitch Dubin, David Frederick, Mike Frediani, David Emmerichs, Douglas Knapp, Chris Tufty, Dan Turrett, Heather Page, Michael Scott, Denis Moran, Dan Copland, Rich Davis, Kenji Luster, Mark August, Eric Fletcher, Sarah Levy, Casey Hotchkiss, David Mahlmann, David Tondeur and Hugh Litfin

Associate Members:

Jennifer Braddock, Tammy Fouts Sandoval, Rochelle Brown, Rachel Hudson and Brad Greenspan

The new Board Members will assume their responsibilities at the next Board of Governors meeting in June. They look forward to working with SOC members on future workshops, screenings, events and fund raising. Please volunteer and become an active member of this important organization.

Constitution Amended  C7BL Cover

The proposed amendments to the SOC Constitution and Bylaws were overwhelmingly approved by the voting members. As a result of these new provisions the Board of Governors will now have the ability to make changes to the Bylaws without having to call for a mail-in vote by the Active Members. This will save the organization time and expense and allow the Board to deal with nuts and bolts of the SOC in a more efficient manner.

The other big change brought about by the approved amendments is the provision that allows Associate Members to be elected to the Board of Governors. Because of this Constitutional revision we now have five new Governors on the Board who are Associate SOC Members. We look forward to their active participation.

The event has its own soul now. Our audience knows what to expect: Superior fellowship within a comfortable yet elegant setting, sumptuous food, plenty of drink, an exciting lineup of inspiring speakers who pull at the heart strings and make us all feel proud to be a part of such a magnificent undertaking. Most importantly, it is the recognition of the humble workers behind the scenes with an elegance and grace that makes it a very significant evening in the lives of these honorees.

Distinguished Service Award recipient
Woody Omens, ASC

The SOC awards event is a night of appreciation, celebration and recognition of professional accomplishment. One of the favorite parts of the evening - and what is truly the capstone of our recognition - is when the lights go out and we watch the work of our honored colleagues on the big screen. This element is precisely why we are gathered, why we love to go to a theater to experience cinema and why we do what we do for a living. Consider now the reason for the success of this element of the show - the accomplishments of editor Bob Joyce and his team to make these true "screen gems" come to life. Bob has dedicated himself to these films like no one else  and the audience have little or no idea of the hours and hours he spent crafting these films which, to this date, have been technically pure and free of a single glitch or missed frame. His work is flawless and he gets my vote for Awards show VIP.

It certainly was the most enjoyable one for me because I was able to totally rely on Associate Awards Producer Denis Moran, SOC who looked after all of the nuts and bolts of the mechanical aspects of the event. That was a major burden lifted from me and I am hugely appreciative of his efforts and friendly, humorous and dedicated camaraderie.

Rochelle Brown and Brad Greenspan
Continued from last year's precedent we did a live web cast of the awards event. This went exceptionally well because of SOC Associate Brad Greenspan's efforts. He started gathering the Teradek Cube and testing months prior and was absolutely as ready as one could be on show night. We heard from watchers in NY, Texas and the U.K. that the signal was high quality and uninterrupted.

Technical Achievement Awards chair Dave Emmerichs, SOC handled the extensive Technical Awards nominations procedure, the blue ribbon panel experts and finally organizing the recipients material for print and screen. Both of the recipients, Canon for the C-300 and C-500 cameras and Dave Eubank for his pCAM Film+Digital Calculator were honored. Canon supported the event with a ten thousand dollar donation. Their partner in data recording, AJA also gave ten thousand dollars. A great demonstration of support! The SOC welcomes AJA and Canon as Corporate members.

SOC Associate Rochelle Brown, for the second year, met the challenge of administering the demanding Camera Operator of

the Year contest. Starting in summer with calls for nominations and then submissions, blue ribbon panel nomination decisions and then the contacts. That's ten busy camera operators! Not easy to gather elements for the web, the magazine, the program book, screeners, Q&As ... It's a whirlwind of activity and Rochelle says, "OK, I got it" that gets it done.

A long tradition of extraordinary effort needs acknowledgment. With gratitude from the SOC, we appreciate the tireless efforts of SOC Editor in Chief and Publisher Lynn Lanning. Like Bob Joyce, Lynn stays the course heading for the utopia of printed perfection as it applies to our treasured Awards Event Tribute Program Book. It is not only the most accurate compendium of the accomplishments of the honorees, presenters and participants it is an artful appreciation of photography. The deliberation and careful choices of images show the wealth of Lynn's knowledge of our craft and passion. Lynn also knows the hard facts of advertising qualms and quibbles so she endeavors to match up sponsors with images to make everyone happy.

Governors Award recipient Penny Marshall with SOC President Chris Tufty

The beautiful invitation this year was designed by Elke Weiss, also designing the new Cammy Award vertical banners. She created the 3-D CGI Cammy. These two banners add elegance and branding to the event. Douglas Knapp, SOC painstakingly supervised the Cammy Trophy and Plaque production as well as printing and mailing out the invitations.

Continuing for his fifth year behind the camera and lighting of the Award recipient interviews and Camera Operator Q&A is Bob Fisher. Bob also filmed the behind the scenes at the awards with the Canon C300. He has become the SOC documentarian. He did an absolutely beautiful job with Kyra's interview session in President Tufty's home. Assisting Bob is Associate member Kimberly Palmer. Both Bob and Kim worked with me on the Vision Center film.

No event can happen without it costing something and subsequently being paid for. Dan Turrett, SOC, Treasurer, was amazing in the necessary short term turn around vendor payments needed. Invoices flying in, payments flying out.

Our newly appointed SOC Sponsorship director Dan Dodd and his team of power cash grabbers were intrepid in the effort of securing our sponsorship dollars. It was a successful step for us having Ingle Dodd Media handle our sponsorships.

Distinguished Service Lifetime Honoree, 2009, Larry Parker of Mole Richardson helped light the theater interior with a 2k backlight to the audience, the courtyard patio party area and the step and repeat banner press area.

The SOC, in its capacity as supporter of the Vision Center at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, held its second Still Photography Silent Auction. Jennifer Braddock and Lynn Lanning worked with Diana Penilla of the WB Studio Photo Lab to create a dozen beautiful mounted enlargements of Still Photographer Lifetime Achievement Honoree Melissa Moseley's work. These photos

were displayed in the lobby and the majority of them were sold off benefiting the Vision Center.

SOC media manager Liz Radley, SOC, is editing the 2013 show, combining the behind the scenes from Bob Fisher and the Barber boom, Steadi pod and the Kate Rhees Davies red carpet honoree interviews. Plans for next awards: the red carpet show to have a proper producer as a live sponsored webcast.

The 2013 awards DVD will be available soon.

The 2011 DVD will follow. The 2012 DVD is available now.

Thanks also to all the folks and their hard work that I ran out of room to mention. I am grateful and we know that it's a thoughtful collaborative effort and I am honored to lead that precious effort.

Thank you

giant resolution Did You Know?
There Are Giant Camera Resolution Test Charts Scattered Across the US

from PetaPixel.com
by Michael Zhang Feb 15, 2013

When people test cameras and lenses for resolution, they commonly use special resolution test charts that are filled with black bars of varying lengths and thicknesses. They're kind of like eye charts, except for cameras instead of eyeballs, and with lines instead of letters.

Well, did you know that in dozens of locations around the United States, there are gigantic resolution test charts on the ground?

The Center for Land Use Interpretation writes that the strange "land-based two-dimensional optical artifacts" are used for the development of aerial photography - cameras built into airplanes and drones.

The resolution charts were mostly used during the 50s and 60s, but some of them may still be used nowadays to calibrate "flying cameras." They have dimensions of around 50-80 feet and are coated in heavy black and white paint. Here's what one target looks like from the ground:

NYC Camera Operator Workshop
SOC Supports Local 600 workshop at Panavision New York

On May 18 IATSE Local 600's 4-day Camera Operator Workshop commenced at Panavision in New York City. The training was supervised by SOC associate member Sol Negrin, ASC (Distinguished Service Award 2012). Students were led through various operating scenarios by newly inducted SOC members Doug Pellegrino and Jim Denny. The workshop had full enrollment soon after it was announced resulting in a huge wait list. With the proliferation of production on the East Coast there is a yearning for workshops by those new to the industry as well as for experienced crew members. The SOC is building a greater member-presence across the nation, so we are planning more signature trainings in the near future.

Michael Frediani, SOC attended the workshop on behalf of the Society recounting our history, seminars, awards events and generous contributions to the Vision Center at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Frediani showed the SOC's imaginative short film "Reverse Angle," gave away pins and stickers, and raffled off a number of SOC Wear items to the delight of the attendees.

CamCon at UCSB
SOC Supports Santa Barbara Workshop

For the fourth consecutive year the SOC lent its support to the completely student run "CamCon" which is a weekend workshop organized by the film students to bring working pros up to the campus to share their knowledge and skills in a mentoring experience. This year SOC members Dave Frederick, Dan Kneece, Eric Fletcher and Rochelle Brown made the drive up the UCSB campus and shared their passion for the craft with the eager film program students.

UCSB CamCon

Tiffen once again supplied two Steadicam rigs for the hands on workshop instructed by Eric and Rochelle while Dan set up a real world example of the working dynamic of a Camera Operator working with a Director and the Director of Photography with a cast. Dave put the students through a closely mentored handheld shooting experience. Approximately 26 students were on hand to participate in the 5 hour SOC workshop segment.

Student organizer Thuongvu Ho commented, "I learned a lot personally and I could feel the enthusiasm throughout the day. Dave, Dan, Rochelle and Eric inspired us today and I can't thank you enough."
