Advocating For Vulnerable Adults -

An Important Part of Dutton & Casey

It might be too late to assist the family of Ernie Banks, whose will was changed in 2014 to the benefit of his caregiver, but this new statutory tool will protect others from being victimized by non-family caregivers of persons requiring care. Attorney Janna Dutton, an active advocate for vulnerable adults for over 30 years, as a member of the Illinois National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys has written a new section of the Probate Act, "Presumptively Void Transfers", which addresses this issue.    read more.

National Healthcare Decisions Day - April 16, 2015

National Healthcare Decisions Day

(NHDD) is a national initiative to encourage adults of all ages to plan ahead of a health crisis. Making decisions ahead of time and putting your wishes in writing can bring peace of mind to families as It helps to avoid the difficult situations that are so common when a person becomes seriously ill and the family is left to guess what their loved one would have wanted.

POLST

The traditional way to communicate one's wishes is through an advance directive. While these are a good start, they may not guarantee that wishes are honored.

A POLST form (provider orders for life sustaining treatment) is intended for a person is serious ill or with a life-limiting illness. It is a signed medical order reflecting a person's wishes that goes with the person across settings of care that must be honored by all healthcare providers.
