Good News
From the Church of the Good Shepherd
a welcoming and inclusive parish dedicated to growing in faith, spirit and community

May 25, 2014

From the Rector:
To Run With Endurance

One of my favorite passages of scripture is from the end of the Book of Hebrews.   It reads in part, "Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us...." The last time our lectionary included that reading was the Wednesday of Holy Week.  The preacher at an early morning worship service at one of our neighboring parishes chose that text for her reflection that day, and she observed that one reason that passage had struck her so strongly was because the Boston Marathon was then only a few days away.  She went on to describe how much she admires friends and acquaintances of hers who were training for the marathon, and how powerful it is to think of a life of faith as a long distance race.

My brother was an avid long distance runner until a back injury necessitated him finding other athletic pursuits, and my younger son runs cross country.  I know from watching them that long distance running requires stamina, built over time, and that distance runners have to be willing to train every day, in all kinds of weather and under all conditions.  Running, particularly competitive running, requires athletes to push themselves, to be disciplined and determined, sometimes in the face of discomfort or even pain.  It probably should not be surprising then that the writer of Hebrews would use running a race as a metaphor for a life in Christ.  (Indeed, there are a number of passages in scripture using this metaphor.)

On my first Sunday back at Good Shepherd, I was talking with Spencer Dalby, and I was delighted--and extremely impressed--to learn that Spencer qualified for and completed the 2014 Boston Marathon.  He told me (and I'm repeating his wise words with permission), "I had to do a lot of training and work hard to be able to run that race, but I was able to finish the marathon.  And I was thinking today that you're in a kind of race too, and you're just at the beginning.  But you can do it."  It was such a hopeful and lovely thing to say, and it inspired me to copy the passage from Hebrews, and to read it often.

We all face difficulties, struggle, and pain.  And each of us gets to choose how we will respond.  The good news is that it is possible to let go of the things that weigh us down, and as the writer of Hebrews puts it, to "lay aside the sin that clings so closely."  We are not alone, and we don't have to try to do this alone.  We are surrounded by a "great a cloud of witnesses," those people in our lives and our history whose faith endured, and whose courage did not fail.  The passage from Hebrews goes on to say that we can look to Jesus "the pioneer and perfecter of our faith."

No matter what challenges our lives bring, we can remember that Jesus promised us we will be given what we need.  Even suffering can be transformed or at least faced squarely and with integrity as we claim God's love and grace.  We need not lose heart, because we can trust that God will give us the strength we need, and that all will be well, here and hereafter.

El Hogar Service Trip Information Meeting on
Wednesday, May 28th

Good Shepherd will be making its first service trip to El Hogar in Honduras the week of
October 18-25, 2014.  A week at El Hogar can be a life-changing experience.  Anyone interested in joining the team, or just finding out more about it, is invited to attend an informational meeting on Wednesday, May 28th from 7:30-9:00 pm in the lounge.  Liz Kinchen, Executive Director of El Hogar Ministries in North America, will be present along with Rev. Scottie and Eileen Marks to offer details of the trip and answer questions about the trip and about El Hogar.  You can find much more information about El Hogar (including service teams) at www.elhogar.org.

There is a new team from the Burlington, MA Rotary Club at El Hogar this week.   If you are interested in seeing what a team does while at El Hogar, visit www.rotarymay2014.blogspot.com to check out their daily blog and photos.

June 1, Outdoor Worship Service and Parish Picnic

The Mystic Valley Deanery by Karen Ward
St. Elizabeth's Wilmington

The Mystic Valley Deanery consists of clergy and delegates who gather three or four times a year to exchange ideas and engage in discussions of events and items of interest or concern.  The meetings take place at different parishes and typically the host church provides a potluck supper prior to conducting business.  Each parish checks in with news and happenings taking place at their respective churches.  Old business is revisited with updates, then new business is addressed.

Sheila Batchelder and I are the delegates from the Church of the Good Shepherd. The most recent meeting took place on May 6th.  We assembled at Saint Elizabeth's in Wilmington,  a small quaint church which also has an outdoor chapel.

We reported our progress on the Capital Campaign, citing roof repairs, the new sidewalk and sprucing up the Sunday school rooms. We spoke of the wall around the windows built by the Boy Scouts as an Eagle Project, and future work to be performed in the next few years, which will probably not include the kitchen, which needs to be updated to satisfy the Board of Health.  This prompted a side discussion among the other churches about their experiences with their own local board departments.  Next we reported on the formation of our Communications Committee this past winter.

Finally we inquired what other churches do for fundraising that is different or unique.  It appears this will be on the agenda for the next meeting as it sparked some interest.   The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 25th at Saint John's in Winthrop.

Come to Camp at BCH!

Situated on 350 pristine acres on Otter Lake in Greenfield, New Hampshire, The Barbara Harris Camp is a ministry of our diocese, serving children and young people from all over the Diocese of Massachusetts and indeed from other states and even abroad.  The Camp is accredited by the American Camping Association and offers all of the traditional experiences of "sleep away" camp: hiking, a ropes course, canoeing and water sports, archery, arts and crafts, music and skits, and great food.  More importantly, The Camp is a welcoming and inclusive place to make friends, to grow in faith, and to experience dynamic worship.

There are programs for campers entering fourth grade through high school.  Most sessions are one week long, but this year, there is a two week camp option.  There are new programs this year for teens, including EDGE, a program devoted to outdoor challenges and adventure.  Older teens are invited to specialized camping experiences such as a week of community service, a music and drama camp, and a two week leadership development program.

The cost of a session of camp is $575, but due to a generous scholarship endowment, no child is turned away for lack of funds, and the scholarship application is very easy.  Brochures and applications are available in the office.  If you know of a child or teen who would be interested in attending The Camp, please speak with Rev. Scottie or go directly to www.bchcenter.org/camp or www.facebook.com/bchcenter.

Vacuum Cleaner needed
Do you have a vacuum cleaner that you could donate to the church?  An upright is preferable. Your contribution would be tax-deductible, and much appreciated.  Please contact Elaine Grosso with any questions at ecgrosso@ieee.org.

Good Shepherd Needs You!
Can you give Good Shepherd eight hours of your time in 2014?
We need another cleaner to help us out for the rest of this year.
We have six teams, and we need one person to help on one of the teams.  It would require about 1.5-2 hours on 4 days to cover the rest of the year.  The exact work date and time of day is flexible, but these are the weeks where help is needed:  Jul 12, Oct 4, Oct 25, and Dec 6.

This important work helps us save approximately $10,000 a year for the church.  In addition, when our expenses decrease, our diocesan assessment also goes down.  Some of our current volunteers have done it for quite a while, and we need some new help to clean "God's house."  You will get a great feeling from doing this!  For more details, contact Elaine Grosso at ecgrosso@ieee.org or Karen Ward at karenalden@aol.com.

Book of Remembrance for Bishop Tom Shaw

Each congregation in our diocese is preparing a Book of Remembrance to be presented to Bishop Tom this summer.  Please look for our book in the lounge on Sundays (or in the office during the week), and use it to record and share your thoughts about his ministry and/or prayers for him.

These books will be presented to Bishop Tom at a culminating celebration and commemoration of his ministry at a Family Picnic and BBQ on June 21st.  The festive event will take place from 10:30 am - 1:00 pm, rain or shine, at the Pinebank Promontory on Jamaica Pond (corner of Perkins Street and the Jamaicaway) in Jamaica Plain.

For your prayers....

O God of compassion, at whose table all are welcome:  draw near to homebound, hospitalized, or sick members of our parish family during the coming week, and to those who minister to them.  May all our members always feel included at our table, strengthened in our friendship, renewed by bread and wine for their life's journey and always filled with your loving presence, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

The following members of our parish community have asked for our prayers.  Please remember them this week when you pray, and let us know if there is anyone whose name you would like to add.

Bill Andrews, John Andrews, Christine Camper, Kevin Cellucci, Gerry Chagnon, Dick Ellis, Betty Fraser, Bernice Herrick, Linda Johnnene, Scott Johnnene, Thomas and Henrietta Kane, Debra Katt-Lloyd, Joe Lehman, Tony Lopes, Rheta McKinley, Bishop Thomas Shaw, Kevin Smith, Amanda Stasonis, Jake Torrisi, Ralph Ventola, Michael Webb and Nickie Zitoli.
