Good News
From the Church of the Good Shepherd
a welcoming and inclusive parish dedicated to growing in faith, spirit and community

April 20, 2014

From the Senior Warden:  Holy Week and Good Things to Come!

This week we will relive the dark days leading up to Jesus' crucifixion and the celebration of his resurrection.  We will pray together from Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday, and spend quiet time alone, pondering this story.  We may see or imagine the iconic images of Jesus on the colt heading towards Jerusalem, Jesus surrounded by his disciples at the Last Supper, or the two Marys at the empty tomb.  So much of our faith is based on this one week in history; the story is hard to hear and understand, but without the difficult times, we would not be able to celebrate the glorious end to this story.

Whenever we experience trying times, we need to have the same faith that Jesus had.  The good is yet to come.  This was a long winter - I think even the diehard winter athletes will agree.  In my house, the kids were even getting bored with the usually much anticipated snow days.  Our faith and optimism about good things to come was apparent as we watched for the new green growth peeking through the soil, and in some cases, patches of snow.  This deep faith got us through to the beautiful spring days we are beginning to experience.  It will do the same as we hope for cooler days when we experience the dog days of summer, which will be here before we know it.

Good Shepherd has been through a difficult time during the past few months.  Some uncertainty was present, but our faith in God, our church, Rev. Roger and in Scottie has helped us truly know that good things await.  Prayers and contemplation of our future have abounded, and at this time I am happy to tell you that Scottie will be back soon. On the recommendation of the Diocese, your Vestry and I are meeting frequently and working with a consultant and Scottie to facilitate her return and address both her needs and ours.  It is our goal to have her return as soon as possible, and we are hopeful this will be in mid to late May.  Please continue to keep the Vestry, Scottie, Roger and our consultant in your prayers as we do this hard but important work.

Jesus had the ultimate faith - and we can learn from him and apply that same faith to the minor distractions of our life.  As I pray this week, and remember his story, I will take that to heart and know that we await good things, such as Scottie's return!

With love to you all, and faith in each one of you,

Linda

Annual Parish Auction -- April 26th!

Please mark your calendars for the evening of April 26th  for our annual Parish Auction. Social hour begins at 6:00 follwed by the Auction at 7:00pm.  This year will feature a Cinco de Mayo theme, so start thinking about your festive attire now!

The auction is a fun evening out with friends, and a chance to support our Church.    What can you to do help, you ask?

  • Attend!  Grab a friend or two and make a night of it.
  • Donate an item or service to be auctioned.  Some past auction items include wine gift baskets, babysitting services, pet sitting services, dinner with the Sands, a round of golf, and dinner or theater tickets.  Please send donations of auction items to Sue Geraghty at spgeraghty@verizon.net.

Don't forget to sign up -- it helps us plan.  You can click here to sign up online, or there is a sheet on the bulletin board outside the sanctuary.  We hope to have a list of the auction items available prior to the 26th.  If you can't make it, we are happy to do your bidding for you!

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer to help, please contact Merri DuRoss at mduross6@comcast.net or 781-944-2268.

Newly Elected Bishop

On Saturday, April 5th, the Rev. Alan Gates, Rector of St. Paul's Church in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, was elected to be our next bishop.  Bishop-Elect Gates must now receive a majority of consents of the church's diocesan bishops and diocesan Standing Committees.  Pending those consents, his ordination will take place on Saturday, September 13th at the Agganis Arena at Boston University.

Bishop-Elect Gates, 56, has been the rector of St. Paul's Church in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, since 2004.  He is a graduate of Middlebury College and undertook graduate studies at Georgetown University. He holds a Master of Divinity degree from Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass.  He was ordained to the priesthood in 1988 and served congregations in the Episcopal dioceses of Massachusetts, Western Massachusetts, and Chicago prior to his call to Ohio.  He and his wife, Patricia Harvey, live in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and have two children.

More information about our new bishop and the election, including individual ballot results, can be found on the diocesan website www.diomass.org.

Parish Directory

An updated Parish Directory is available on our website at www.goodshepherdreading.org (scroll down to the bottom right of the home page).  The password is woburnstreet.  Please check your listing and contact the parish office by April 30 at cgsreading@gmail.com or 781-944-7572 if you would like to make any corrections or changes.  If you are new to the parish and not in the directory, please call the parish office to be added.  Once all changes are received we will post a new version.

Mowers Needed!
Want to work outside volunteering a couple of hours every six weeks or so during the spring, summer and fall?  Need volunteer hours for school?  The church mowing team needs you! We supply the mower and gas.  It is self-propelled, but the terrain of the church is not flat so it takes some energy.  We dispose of our clippings in the compost pile.

The work takes about 1-2 hours and we think we'll have enough volunteers so you will only be scheduled every 6 weeks or so.  There is some flexibility, but we usually target Friday, Saturday or Sunday -- you choose when based on your schedule and the weather.  Please email Elaine Grosso at ecgrosso@ieee.org, call 781-942-1169, or text 617-909-5205 if interested.  Thank you!

Cleaning Team
We also need a cleaning volunteer to work approximately 1.5-2 hours every six weeks.  This would also qualify for school volunteer hours. The cleaner will primarily be doing the following chores:
  • emptying wastebaskets (taking the trash home and disposing with your own trash if you can)
  • removing cobwebs all around the church
  • cleaning and refilling supplies in bathrooms as needed
  • dusting baseboards, pews, & windowsills as needed
Our cleaning team saves the church thousands of dollars each year. If interested, please email Elaine at ecgrosso@ieee.org, call 781-942-1169, or text 617-909-5205.  Thanks!

Opening for Church Fair Co-Chair!
Falliday Fair 2013

Our FALL-iday Fair will be November 14-15, 2014. Yes, it's a long time from now, but by doing things well in advance it is fun and not a chore!  I am looking for someone to co-chair the event with me. No experience needed -- I would love to get someone new involved!

If interested, please email Elaine Grosso at ecgrosso@ieee.org, call 781-942-1169, or text 617-909-5205.

For your prayers....

O God of compassion, at whose table all are welcome:  draw near to homebound, hospitalized, or sick members of our parish family during the coming week, and to those who minister to them.  May all our members always feel included at our table, strengthened in our friendship, renewed by bread and wine for their life's journey and always filled with your loving presence, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

The following members of our parish community have asked for our prayers.  Please remember them this week when you pray, and let us know if there is anyone whose name you would like to add.

Christine Camper, Kevin Cellucci, Gerry Chagnon, Dick Ellis, Marie Field, Betty Fraser, Bernice Herrick, Linda Johnnene, Scott Johnnene, Thomas and Henrietta Kane, Debra Katt-Lloyd, Joe Lehman, Tony Lopes, Lynn McDonald, Rheta McKinley, Bishop Thomas Shaw, Kevin Smith, Hector Torres, Jake Torrisi, Scottie Wagner, Stephen Wagner, Michael Webb and Nickie Zitoli.
