Good News
From the Church of the Good Shepherd
a welcoming and inclusive parish dedicated to growing in faith, spirit and community

March 30, 2014

From the Senior Warden

Dear Friends,

I know we have all been looking forward to the end of winter and the beginning of spring.  Even more so, you have been watching the calendar, counting the days until Scottie's return.  I appreciate all of your prayers, support and patience during these three months, and ask you to bear with us for just a bit longer.

Many of you have approached vestry members and me asking about her return.  I can share with you that the vestry in the process of obtaining input from Scottie and the diocese.  We will be meeting next week and working together to evaluate her recovery and progress, and to decide what is best for Scottie and Good Shepherd.

As of now, Scottie's date of return is not certain.  In the meantime, Rev. Roger has agreed to stay with us as we move through Lent towards the glorious Easter season.  Lent is a season of reflection and prayer in which we all try to determine our place in Christian life, dedicate ourselves to God and anticipate the Resurrection.  As we do so, it is timely that we are praying for Scottie and Good Shepherd and anticipating our new life.

I will share information with you as I am able and, on behalf of the vestry, ask that you keep Scottie, her family and Good Shepherd in your prayers.

Spreading the Word of Church of the Good Shepherd: Our New Communications Committee

Our new Communications Committee will be giving a presentation at coffee hour this Sunday, March 30.
  • Meet the team!
  • Learn about what we are doing.
  • Discover how you can get involved through social media.
  • Explore Facebook and Twitter and how it can benefit the Church.
  • Let us answer your questions

Churches in the 21st century are not like those of our parents or our grandparents.  People do not automatically attend a particular church because their family did in the past.  Many people are unsure of their faith in the churches that they were raised in, and are looking for a different place to worship and to grow their faith. As Jesus tasked us to preach the good news to all people, it is our duty to tell these people we are here and to invite them to be a part of our family.  But in today's world, there are many new ways and different strategies to tell people that we are here and what we stand for.

The Church of Good Shepherd's Communications Committee was formed to address the following mission:

  • To assess and recommend events and aspects of our parish that are appealing and important
  • To educate the congregation on how they can assist with newer forms of communications, such as social media
  • To improve communications internally and externally by publicizing the church's activities to the local community through the use of traditional and social media means

Through an ongoing plan that incorporates these aspects in alignment with the church's activities, the intended goals of the Communications Committee are to foster growth of the church by making it more visible and appealing; to drive larger attendances to its public events; and to attract new, younger families to join our welcoming community.

Committee members include co-chairs Kristian LeBlanc and Valerie LeBlanc, Peter Gorman, Bob Stasonis, and Warren Poor.  New members welcome!

Rev Roger and Daniel Many of you met Rev. Roger's friend Daniel Kuol Paac when he came to Good Shepherd a few weeks ago.  Daniel is from South Sudan in Africa.  His is a remarkable story of survival and determination supported by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Daniel arrived one Sunday morning in January 2010 at the Parish of the Epiphany in Winchester.  There he met the Rev. Roger Nelson, who agreed to become his sponsor for a student visa in the USA.

Daniel received such a visa in late spring 2010, and has now completed his classes, graduating from Bunker Hill Community College with honors in June 2013.  He is presently enrolled in Harvard Extension School courses working towards a degree in international governmental relations.

Daniel is a devout convert to Jesus and an active member of Epiphany as well as the Sudanese Anglican congregation at Grace Episcopal Church in Everett.  He lives with Rev. Nelson and his educational expenses are provided for by a special fund supported by members of Epiphany.  Any donations to this fund should be made out to the Parish of the Epiphany, marked "Daniel" on the memo line and sent to the church at 70 Church Street, Winchester, MA 01890.
