Good News
From the Church of the Good Shepherd
a welcoming and inclusive parish dedicated to growing in faith, spirit and community

December 8, 2013

A Note from Rev. Scottie

I can hardly find the words to say how thankful I am to be a part of this wonderful, loving church.  Thank you all so much for your support, prayers, calls, notes and cards, and offers to help.  Your love and care have been truly humbling.  I am getting great medical care, and am on the mend.  I'm back at work starting today, and am most grateful to our parish leaders for allowing me to have a week off, including a Sunday.  Thanks especially to Eileen Marks, our parish administrator, for "holding down the fort" in my absence, and to our senior warden, Linda Hank, who did such a great job with communications, and to Barbara Luddy and Marie Field, who led Morning Prayer so ably last Sunday.

From the Rector:
 Presence Instead of Presents

The Christmas stuff has been out in all the stores since late October; Stop and Shop moved in the Christmas chocolates and wrapping paper just as soon as they cleared out the Halloween candy.  In most places, it's all Christmas, all the time, with carols in the background in restaurants and stores.  In our church, though, it isn't Christmas yet, it's Advent.  And Advent is about preparing our hearts and minds, looking at our lives and opening ourselves to God.

Judging from the commercials on television, the primary purpose of this season is shopping.  The so-called "black Friday" sales started in some stores at a minute after midnight on the Friday after Thanksgiving, and in many states, stores were open on Thanksgiving.  (Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island are the only three states that still require most stores to be closed on Thanksgiving.)  In one commercial, carolers sing "Shop, shop, shop, shop, shop" to the tune of "Deck the Halls," as women ignore the Thanksgiving dishes and grab their car keys.  In another, a woman (it seems always to be a woman) heavily laden with bags filled with designer clothes is given the title "the gifter."  In still another ad, this one for a store famous for underpaying its workers, a woman who scores a Disney character doll is told, "Mom, you own this holiday!"

I'm not suggesting that we not engage in Christmas activities, or that we all adopt austerity.  I love the trappings of the season: lights and greenery and Christmas trees, parties and special music.  And I'm not saying that everyone should forego presents.  (I'll admit it: I like gifts as much as anyone.)  What I am urging is simplifying a bit, turning down the pressure on ourselves, and relinquishing some of the expectations that can cause us to feel stressed or even resentful.

One of our parishioners told me not too long ago that in her large family, they draw names rather than give gifts to everyone, and that this year, she has asked that instead of store-bought presents, family members give each other the gift of time, doing an activity together or sharing a hobby or a lesson or a meal.  Another parishioner makes gifts rather than buying them.  My hope for all of us is that we can consider giving generously of our time and attention, being present to the people we love.  I also hope that each of us might consider doing something tangible for others, perhaps sponsoring a child from El Hogar, or donating items for the food pantry, or volunteering.

Piles of presents and tons of decorations don't necessarily make the season more joyful.  The only perfect present is being present.

Saints Alive!  St. Andrew, November 30

Andrew and Peter were one of two sets of brothers, the other being James and John, whom Jesus called as disciples.  Jesus gave James and John a cool nickname--he called them "The Sons of Thunder," and Peter was possibly Jesus' closest friend, certainly a member of the inner circle of disciples.  John is often referred to as the beloved disciple.  Andrew seems sometimes to be forgotten among those more famous brothers.  (I often think of him as the Bible version of the Manning brother who isn't Eli or Peyton.  His name is Cooper, by the way.)

In the Orthodox tradition, Andrew is known as "first called."  The gospels don't tell us who was the elder brother, but tradition has it that Andrew was older than his brother Simon Peter.  (There is a beautiful painting by Caravaggio of a clean-shaven Jesus calling Andrew and Peter as disciples.  Peter has a long, bright red beard, and Andrew is depicted as a much older man with thinning gray hair.)  Andrew may have been a disciple of John the Baptist, and it was Andrew who introduced Peter to Jesus.  It was Andrew who brought the little boy with loaves and fish to Jesus.

Legend has it that Andrew's preaching reached as far as Kiev, and he is a patron saint of Ukraine, Romania, and Russia.  Andrew was martyred by crucifixion, the legend being that he asked for an X-shaped cross because he did not feel worthy of being crucified on the same kind of cross on which Jesus died.  When some of Andrew's relics were delivered to Scotland from Constantinople, he became patron saint of Scotland, and it is the St. Andrew cross on Scotland's flag.  Andrew was, of course, a fisherman, and he is still honored as the patron saint of fishermen.

Wreath Sale 2013

Good Shepherd's annual Christmas Wreath Sale begins this Sunday, December 8 and continues each Sunday through December 15 or until all wreaths are sold.  They sold out early last year ... so don't wait!!

You can purchase beautiful 24-inch wreaths after each service on Sunday at just $10 a wreath ... this is a huge bargain with proceeds going to the church.  In addition to making your front door welcoming and festive, the wreaths can also be used as your family Advent wreath.

Please plan to purchase your Christmas wreaths at Church of the Good Shepherd and let your friends and family know too!  You may contact Andi Simpson at asimpson@federalrealty.com (617-990-7075) to reserve yours for pick up on the 8th or 14th, or simply purchase them after the 8am or 10am service.  Pick up at Andi's house may also be arranged.

Wreaths are $10 undecorated and this year we will also be offering wreaths with a bow at $15.

Advent Adult Formation Series: "A Useful Advent"
Starts This Week

The run up to Christmas is often a busy and even stressful time.  For some people, the four weeks of Advent are too filled with activity: concerts and recitals at school, parties and other celebrations, shopping, wrapping, cooking.  The schedule at church is often busier than usual as well, with special services, more outreach, visits, formation.  For some people, perhaps there isn't enough activity.  Some people find themselves feeling lonely and at loose ends.  Our Advent Adult Formation series this year will be an opportunity to explore ways of feeling useful and engaged rather than simply busy.  The goal is to experience Advent as a time of preparation and even wonder, and to be intentional about discerning ways of being of service and feeling useful.  We will use written materials, scripture, and intentional spiritual practice as we experience the season.  Classes will meet on three consecutive Wednesdays, beginning December 4, from 7-8:30, and will offer discussion time, learning, and time for prayer and reflection.  Please click here to sign up online, or sign up in person on the sheet on the bulletin board outside the sanctuary.

Our class facilitator is The Rev. Lisa Fagerstrom, a United Methodist Pastor who is director of Christian Formation and Discipleship at Wesley Memorial Church in Worcester and Minister of Program and Administration at Harvard-Epworth Church in Cambridge.  She is also a certified Spiritual Director.  Rev. Lisa and Rev. Scottie are fellow alumnae of Vanderbilt.  (Lisa holds an engineering degree, ensuring that though she and Scottie overlapped in their time at Vanderbilt, their paths never crossed!)

Our Advent Outreach -- El Hogar Adopt-A-Child

El Hogar started in 1979 with five little

boys.  Five hungry, scared, abandoned

boys sleeping under cardboard in a

doorway on the streets of Tegucigalpa.  Five members of the Episcopal Church in Tegucigalpa felt moved to address the deplorable situation of the countless children abandoned to the streets.  So the missionaries rented a home, went out in the middle of the night and brought those five boys home.  They fed the boys, bathed them, and showed them love and compassion.  El Hogar de Amor y Esperanza -- The Home of Love and Hope -- was born.

In the subsequent 33 years over 600 children have graduated from El Hogar, which has grown to include four campuses: an elementary school, a Technical Institute, an Agricultural School and a Girls' Campus.

Our Good Shepherd outreach project for the season of Advent is an Adopt-A-Child program to benefit El Hogar.  So far, 30 of the 88 children featured on our bulletin boards have been adopted for the season by Good Shepherd families!  Here is how the program works:
  1. Choose a child to "adopt" from the photos on the bulletin boards in the hallway outside the office.  Each photo is numbered.
  2. Select the envelope with the corresponding number from the box on the table in the hallway.  The photo inside is yours to keep.
  3. Place a star with the word "adopted" on your child's photo on the bulletin board.
  4. Return the envelope with your donation to the office or the offering plate by January 5th.  Checks should be made payable to Church of the Good Shepherd with "El Hogar" in the memo line.
A suggested donation is $5/day.  You may adopt a child for one day, one week, the entire season of Advent...the amount you donate is entirely up to you!  For more about El Hogar and the transformational work that you will be supporting, please visit www.elhogar.org.  Or ask Rev. Scottie or Eileen Marks in the office -- we have both been to El Hogar and love to share our stories.

Please mark your calendars for our first Good Shepherd service trip to El Hogar in Honduras the week of October 18-25, 2014.  More information about the trip will be forthcoming in the new year.

Welcome to the Scouts!
We want to welcome Boy Scout Troop 728 and Cub Scout Pack 728 to Church of the Good Shepherd.  The scouts will be using our church as a temporary home through June 2014 (and possibly into the fall) while their sponsoring organization, St. Agnes Parish, is undergoing a renovation.

The Boy Scouts will meet here weekly on Sunday afternoons from 4:00-5:30, and bi-weekly on Monday evenings from 7-8pm for Youth Leadership staff meetings.  The Cub Scouts will meet on one Friday evening each month.

Parishioner Nathan Strack is a member of Troop 728 -- you may recall the fantastic work that Nathan and his fellow scouts did to improve our building's drainage system over the past year as Nathan's Eagle project.  We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Nathan on becoming an Eagle Scout!

Stewardship
Thank you to everyone who has turned in their pledge card for 2014. If you have not yet turned yours in, please do so as soon as you can. This information helps us to more accurately budget and plan for next year.  Pledge cards were mailed in mid-November  -- if you did not receive one, or need another, please contact the parish office.  Extra pledge cards are also available on the tables in the sanctuary or in the hallway outside the office.  Thank you!

For your prayers....
O God of compassion, at whose table all are welcome:  draw near to homebound, hospitalized, or sick members of our parish family during the coming week, and to those who minister to them.  May all our members always feel included at our table, strengthened in our friendship, renewed by bread and wine for their life's journey and always filled with your loving presence, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

The following members of our parish community have asked for our prayers.  Please remember them this week when you pray, and let us know if there is anyone whose name you would like to add.

Doug Cameron, Christine Camper, Kevin Cellucci, Betty Fraser, Bernice Herrick, Scott Johnnene, Thomas and Henrietta Kane, Debra Katt-Lloyd, Tony Lopes, Lynn McDonald, Rheta McKinley, Ken Nowakunski, Ben and Judy Sands, Elsie Saunders, Bishop Thomas Shaw, Kevin Smith, Jake Torrisi, Ralph Ventola, Stephen Wagner, and Michael Webb.
