Good News
From the Church of the Good Shepherd
a welcoming and inclusive parish dedicated to growing in faith, spirit and community

December 1, 2013

From the Senior Warden:  Thanksgiving...

Of course, one of the top things on everyone's mind this week is the health of Rev. Scottie.  I am glad to report that she did NOT have she stroke we all feared.  For that, we are thankful.

Medical tests are still being processed, but all indications are that she has a chronic inner ear condition with periodic flare-ups and symptoms mimicking a stroke.  Her prognosis is great, though with having a chronic but incurable condition, she will have to be vigilant with treatment including medications and diet restrictions.  For the medical teams including folks from Good Shepherd who helped Sunday, to Reading Paramedics, to Winchester and Mass General professionals, and the scientists who help to solve medical mysteries, we are thankful;

For all of the prayers for Scottie and for one another, whether from bended knee, or by phone, text, or email, we are thankful;

For our Good Shepherd Eucharistic leaders who carried on in a difficult situation and allowed a Morning Prayer so unexpectedly and desperately needed, we are thankful;

For the Sunday School teachers who spent  time with the children, prayed with them and sheltered  them from something that was hard for adults to process (all while trying to put together the Christmas Pageant), we are thankful;

For our musicians, who shared their talents and created a calming tone, we are thankful;

For our Parish Administrator, who has gone above and beyond, this week especially, we are thankful; and,

For our Diocesan Leadership, providing advice and prayer, we are thankful.

Most especially, for the love shared in Good Shepherd, we are thankful.  I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving, and can only hope that each one of you has a day filled with the Good Shepherd Spirit, wherever you are on Thanksgiving Day.

Linda

Soup Sunday this Sunday, December 1

A tradition here at Good Shepherd is to have a Soup Sunday after Thanksgiving, during coffee hour following the 10:00am service.  Everyone is invited to bring a soup or bread, or something to complement the soups.  We have bakers signed up to bring desserts.   Parishioners and guests are all invited.

Annual Fall Clean-Up
Our fall clean-up has been rescheduled to this Sunday, December 1 after coffee hour (due to the blustery weather last Sunday).  Get out your rakes, shovels and brooms!  All are welcome, since many hands make light work.  Plan to spend some time on what will surely be a lovely fall day with wonderful friends, helping to make our grounds beautiful and ready for the winter.

Advent Outreach -- El Hogar Adopt-A-Child

We would like to thank Liz Kinchen, Executive Director of El Hogar Ministries, for visiting with us last Sunday and for her lovely sermon.  El Hogar is a ministry of the diocese of Honduras, providing hopelessly poor and abandoned children with a home, a nurturing environment, an education and a marketable trade.  If you couldn't be with us, the text of Liz's sermon can be found on our website by clicking here.

Last Sunday we launched our Good Shepherd outreach project for the season of Advent.  We are sponsoring an Adopt-A-Child program to benefit El Hogar.  On our first Sunday, 27 of the 88 children were adopted for the season by Good Shepherd families! Here is how the program works:
  • Choose a child to "adopt" from the photos on the bulletin boards in the hallway outside the office.  Each photo is numbered.
  • Select the envelope with the corresponding number from the box on the table in the hallway.  The photo inside is yours to keep.
  • Place a star with the word "adopted" on your child's photo on the bulletin board.
  • Return the envelope with your donation to the office or the offering plate on Sunday by January 5th.  Checks should be made payable to Church of the Good Shepherd with "El Hogar" in the memo line.
A suggested donation is $5/day.  You may adopt a child for one day, one week, the entire season of Advent...the amount you donate is entirely up to you.  For more about El Hogar and the transformational work that you will be supporting, please visit www.elhogar.org.  Or ask Rev. Scottie or Eileen Marks in the office -- we have both been to El Hogar and love to share our stories!

Please mark your calendars for our first Good Shepherd service trip to El Hogar in Honduras the week of October 18-25, 2014.  More information about the trip will be forthcoming in the new year.

Advent Adult Formation Series: "A Useful Advent"

The run up to Christmas is often a busy and even stressful time.  For some people, the four weeks of Advent are too filled with activity: concerts and recitals at school, parties and other celebrations, shopping, wrapping, cooking.  The schedule at church is often busier than usual as well, with special services, more outreach, visits, formation.  For some people, perhaps there isn't enough activity.  Some people find themselves feeling lonely and at loose ends.  Our Advent Adult Formation series this year will be an opportunity to explore ways of feeling useful and engaged rather than simply busy.  The goal is to experience Advent as a time of preparation and even wonder, and to be intentional about discerning ways of being of service and feeling useful.  We will use written materials, scripture, and intentional spiritual practice as we experience the season.  Classes will meet on three consecutive Wednesdays, beginning December 4, from 7-8:30, and will offer discussion time, learning, and time for prayer and reflection.  Please click here to sign up online, or sign up in person on the sheet on the bulletin board outside the sanctuary.

Our class facilitator is The Rev. Lisa Fagerstrom, a United Methodist Pastor who is director of Christian Formation and Discipleship at Wesley Memorial Church in Worcester and Minister of Program and Administration at Harvard-Epworth Church in Cambridge.  She is also a certified Spiritual Director.  Rev. Lisa and Rev. Scottie are fellow alumnae of Vanderbilt.  (Lisa holds an engineering degree, ensuring that though she and Scottie overlapped in their time at Vanderbilt, their paths never crossed!)

First Annual Children's "Drop and Shop"
Saturday, December 7 from 1:00-4:00pm

Children ages 3 and up are welcome to have a private Christmas shopping event at the Bargain Box.  They can then wrap their purchases and enjoy games and crafts while their parents can take some time to get ready for the holidays.  Please RSVP to Kim Manzelli at manzelli2@verizon.net if your children are planning to attend -- it would be very helpful to have an idea of how many children to expect!

FALL-iday Fair 2013
Falliday Fair 2013

From Elaine Grosso, Fair Chair:

The Church really put its best foot forward for the 100th anniversary, and we had a great fair on Nov 15/16.  Thank you all who worked so hard to make it a success and to those who attended, spent some money, and had fun for the benefit of the church.  People helped spruce up the yard ahead of time, we had the lights shining on the windows at night, and beautiful weather both days.

Approximately 35 people worked at the fair; and I am so grateful for their dedication.  It was a terrific team effort.  Our attendance was approximately 400, up a little from 380 last year.  Many of our customers find our fair is very affordable for them even though their means are small.

We got to show off our new walkway, buffed floor and new curtains, as well as our nice new tables.  We had 9 vendors, and through our advertising on Craigslist, turned away as many more.

We got excellent newspaper coverage, being on the front page of the Chronicle both before AND after the fair with color pictures and also with a picture in the Advocate.  We had new people and the Sunday School kids participating and some great suggestions for next year.  The raffle table not only contributed to the fair, but has held some items for the upcoming Service Auction in 2014.

Our current plan for 2014 is to have the fair on Nov 14/15.  I am looking for someone to help co-chair the fair with me next year, as my parents are aging.  Please contact me at ecgrosso@verizon.net

Stewardship
Thank you to everyone who has turned in their pledge card for 2014.  If you have not yet turned yours in, please do so as soon as you can.  This information helps us to more accurately budget and plan for next year.  Pledge cards were mailed two weeks ago -- if you did not receive one, or need another, please contact the parish office. Extra pledge cards are also available on the tables in the sanctuary or in the hallway outside the office.  Thank you!

For your prayers....
O God of compassion, at whose table all are welcome:  draw near to homebound, hospitalized, or sick members of our parish family during the coming week, and to those who minister to them.  May all our members always feel included at our table, strengthened in our friendship, renewed by bread and wine for their life's journey and always filled with your loving presence, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

The following members of our parish community have asked for our prayers.  Please remember them this week when you pray, and let us know if there is anyone whose name you would like to add.

Christine Camper, Kevin Cellucci, Betty Fraser, Bernice Herrick,

Scott Johnnene, Thomas and Henrietta Kane, Debra Katt-Lloyd, Tony Lopes, Lynn McDonald, Rheta McKinley, Ken Nowakunski, Elsie Saunders, Bishop Thomas Shaw, Kevin Smith, Jake Torrisi, Ralph Ventola, Scottie Wagner, Stephen Wagner, and Michael Webb.

Please also remember Judy and Ben Sands as they go to Guatemala this week to take and distribute clothing, medicine and toys to some of the poorest children in that country.  Our prayers go with you for a good trip and safe travels.
