New Vestry Members
A huge  thank you to Ben Sands for his tireless devotion to Good Shepherd.  Ben is retiring as Senior Warden.  He will continue to co-chair and make calls for the Capital Campaign. We would also like to thank Joanna Torres, who has contributed to our community in so many ways.  Joanna is resigning her position as youth member in order to attend Harvard in the fall.

The following members were recently named to the Vestry:  Linda Hank, Senior Warden to complete the remainder of Ben's term (7/13-1/16); Warren Poor to complete the remainder of Linda's term (7/13-1/14); and Greg Landry to complete the remainder of Joanna's term (7/13-1/15).  Ben Sands will serve as Clerk in a non-voting position.  Congratulations, and thank you for your service!

Warren Poor, Linda Hank, Greg Landry, and Ben Sands

Picnic!
picnic 2013 25

It was a beautiful day for our outdoor Eucharist and parish picnic last Sunday!  Thanks to Kim Manzelli, Trish Leyne, Norah Daly, and Norma Strack...and all the children who blessed us with this very special worship service.  The musical contributions of Carol Abel, Amy Vinson on guitar and Sharon Grosso on violin added to the joyous morning.  Thanks also to expert grillers Mark Manzelli and Mike Daly and all who contributed food to share.  Check out the pictures in the column on the left ... and in the special events section of our website under "What's Happening." Thank you to Warren Poor and Linda Jenny for the photos!  click here to see more

 B-SAFE -- July 15-19th

B-SAFE is a wonderful summer program run by St. Stephen's Church in the South End.  B-SAFE provides safe, fun programming for 500 elementary and middle school students in need at 5 different sites in Boston.  For more information on B-SAFE,

Kim Manzelli will be coordinating Good Shepherd's team this summer for B-SAFE -- thank you Kim!!  Our week at the site at St. Luke's in Chelsea is July 15-19th.  Because it's a short summer, we are sharing responsibility for the week with St. Paul's Lynnfield.

Our role is to provide lunch on Wednesday, July 17 and Thursday, July 18, and plan a field trip with St. Paul's for the kids on Friday.
If you have been thinking of getting more involved in outreach, this is a great way to get started.  Stay tuned for more information and a signup to volunteer and/or donate food.  Meanwhile, please contact Kim to volunteer, or with any questions, at manzelli2@verizon.net

Donations for Guatemala
Last year was to be my last year of going to Guatemala.  My 18 bags were approved at Logan.  The day before, we heard that the woman in Florida would only ship on eight bags, so I had to unpack and repack what I could in the eight.  Came home to 500 pounds of stuff strewn all over the place.  So of course I am going "one last time" again.  This year I will ship 15 bags in August to Ohio to a man who is sending a container of bikes to Nina and says he can fit them in.  Then we can go with the allowed eight.  So I am collecting rather specific items.  If you would like a list, just email me at judysands@verizon.net and I will send you a list.  One of the hardest parts of collecting is all of the items people give me which I can't use, and then I have to figure out what to do with them.  So please do not give me anything not on the list unless you ask.  Thanks!  --Judy Sands

Summer Worship, Office Hours and ENews Hiatus

Starting this week and running through July and Augusts, the church office will be open three days a week:  Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, from 8am - noon.  ENews will be sent on an "as needed" basis.

The summer worship schedule begins this week:  Holy Eucharist, Rite II, with music at 9:00 am.  There will be no Sunday School or child care.  Without those elements, summer becomes a wonderful time to enjoy worshiping together as a family.  Children's bulletins, crayons and pencils will be available at the back of the church.  Please take one on the way in.

Hopefully, whether here in Reading or away on vacation, each member of the Good Shepherd family will be able to take time on Sundays for thanks and praise, refreshment and renewal.

From the Treasurer
Summer is just about here!  School is (almost!) out, vacations are being planned and weekend trips will be taken.  Please remember that CGS is still in operation during the coming months and keeping current with your pledge helps us keep the books balanced and the bills paid.  Thanks so much ... and happy summer!

Summer Hours in the Bargain Box

For the months of July and August, the Bargain Box will be open Saturdays and closed on Fridays.  Items will continue to be collected Wednesday morning (9 - 11:30am) and Saturday during shop hours (10am-1pm).

Choosing Our Next Bishop

On January 15, 2013, our Diocesan Bishop, Tom Shaw, announced his coming retirement.  Bishop Shaw's retirement will occur sometime in 2014, although the exact date is not presently known. The recent discovery and treatment of Bishop Tom's brain cancer has been a shock to all of us, and we continue to pray that he will know God's healing grace.

The people of the Mystic Valley Deanery are invited to engage in prayer, conversation, and listening as we discern together the criteria for choosing our next Diocesan Bishop.  Each voice is important.  We invite you to speak and to listen with faith and the courage of open hearts at a "Listening Event" scheduled for the Mystic Valley Deanery at St. Paul's Parish in Malden, on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, 7:00-9:00pm.

St. Paul'
s is located at 26 Washington Street (corner of Washington and Florence Streets) in Malden.  Free validated parking is available in the Florence Street parking lot adjacent to the church. For the meeting, enter through the main door of the parish house at 26 Washington Street. For directions: www.stpaulsmalden.org

We greatly value your attendance and participation not only to express your point of view, but to hear those of others. However, if you are unable to attend the Mystic Valley Deanery meeting, you may also attend a Listening Event for any of the other Deaneries. They are listed on the diocesan website: www.diomass.org

For your prayers....
O God of compassion, at whose table all are welcome:  draw near to homebound, hospitalized, or sick members of our parish family during the coming week, and to those who minister to them.  May all our members always feel included at our table, strengthened in our friendship, renewed by bread and wine for their life's journey and always filled with your loving presence, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

The following members of our parish community have asked for our prayers.  Please remember them this week when you pray, and let us know if there is anyone whose name you would like to add.

Chuck and Ginny Barthel, Christine Camper, Betty Fraser, Bishop Gayle Harris, Bernice Herrick, Tony Lopes, Lynn McDonald, Eleanor Schott, Bishop Thomas Shaw, Kevin Smith, Anjelica Ventola, Ralph Ventola, and Stephen Wagner.
