Dear BBB Accredited Business,

 

 

 You've probably heard about it - "Heartbleed" Bug was discovered on April 7, but has been in existence for a few years. Businesses and consumers have been hearing of this for the past few days whether is be on the news or on websites they have been logging into. Our first article this month gives Businesses and Consumers information on what to do and how to "fix" this potential problem. 

 

Microsoft has ended all support of Windows XP. The older version of Windows is vulnerable now that there is no support by Microsoft. Read our article to see what should be done if you still have Microsoft XP on your computer. 

 

 The BBB has issued a new Scam Alert regarding a lottery scam that uses the BBB of Arlington, VA's address. The scam uses phony websites of the so called "Consumer Protection Bureau".

"HEARTBLEED" BUG: Business & Consumer Info

The Heartbleed bug exploits a flaw in the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) of popular open source software called OpenSSL. SSL is the standard security technology that establishes an encrypted link between a user's web browser and the server where a website is hosted. It is used to secure numerous kinds of data transfers, including email, instant messaging, social media, and business transactions. Encryption is essential to Internet security.

Warning: Microsoft Ends Support of XP
 

  Microsoft Corporation is no longer providing support for Windows XP, and Better Business Bureau is warning consumers and businesses that they need to take immediate steps to secure their computers and data.

Starting April 8, 2014, the company will not provide technical support or security updates for the 12-year-old XP operating system, or for its Office 2003 software suite (which includes Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.

How the Scam Works:   

  

You get a call from someone claiming you won a lottery. Your prize is $500,000, but you need to pay $5,000 for "delivery insurance" first. The caller assures you that this is a real prize and even directs you to the "US Consumer Protection Bureau" website to verify its legitimacy.
