2013 is here, and even though the year has changed the scams have not. Scam artists often repeat past scams but with a new twist. With that in mind we want to remind you of the "Top 10" Scams of 2012. Keep these scams fresh in your mind this year as it is a very likely possibility they will surface again. 

 

Each and every year, new technology comes to play and brings about questions and concerns from consumers and businesses alike. Two fairly new pieces of technology both incorporate the widely popular smart phone!  

Consumers can now get their receipts via email or other online technology and have these receipts sent right to their smartphone for storing. This might be the easiest way to store a receipt but is it the safest?  

We are also seeing businesses that are able to process credit card transactions right from their smartphone wherever they are. This also seems like a very easy way to keep customers happy, but is it the best thing for your business?  

 

Super Bowl XLVII is coming to New Orleans!

Even though our local team is not in the running for the title, consumers may still want to check out the big game. Anytime an event as big as this is around, there are many opportunities for scam artists to make their move. Anything from tickets to memorabilia can be an opportunity to scam you. Check out our video this month to learn how to protect yourself from a potential scam.

Using smartphone credit card readers, businesses have the capability of taking their sales to the next level, but Better Business Bureau is advising business owners to make sure that such a system is right for their business.

Have you ever opted for a paperless, e-receipt? Some retailers and banks have started offering customers the option of receiving receipts from purchases and ATM transactions via email. While this is a convenient alternative to paper clutter, Better Business Bureau is reminding shoppers to protect their identity in the process. .

The annual "Top Ten Scams" list is pulled from a variety of sources. BBB gathers information on scams from consumers, some of whom have been victims of scams; from federal agencies; and from other reliable information sources.

It's hard to say which are the 'biggest' scams, as far as the number of people affected or the amount of money stolen, because many go unreported or under-reported. Some of these scams have been around as long as BBB - 100 years - and some take advantage of brand new technologies. Our list is made up of the ones that seemed the most audacious, the most egregious. They hurt a lot of people, and it seems that scams are only getting more prevalent even as consumers are getting savvier.
