Spread the Word
A message from the Veterans' Administration
Many of our Nation's Veterans-from those who served during World War II to those involved in current conflicts-leave the military and face an array of life challenges, including difficult experiences, transitions, troubling symptoms, and mental health conditions. The Make the Connection public awareness campaign is key to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) efforts to support Veterans and encourage them to access the support and care they deserve and earned.
The success of Make the Connection depends on support from everyone who interacts with Veterans: friends, family members, and people in communities nationwide as well as Veterans Service Organizations, community-based groups, and local health care providers that have direct contact with Veterans every day. We need your help to build greater awareness of MakeTheConnection.net and the numerous other resources that are available and improving the lives of our Nation's Veterans.
We also want to hear from Veterans who have sought and received mental health support-from any source, including VA, community providers and faith-based organizations-and are in a better place today because of it. If you know someone who is willing to share his or her story, please email info@MakeTheConnection.net.

Law Enforcement in Small and Rural Communities
By Elaine Deck, former Senior Program Manager for the International Association of Chiefs of Police and Co-Owner, Slaton Associates, LLC
Police shows on television, like Rookie Blue or Blue Bloods, always show huge teams of officers racing to a crime scene. They are often set in big city and have lots of resources for responding to crime. The truth is, in smaller and midsized communities, the types of crimes occurring, the numbers of crimes and arrests, and the resources available to respond to crime are vastly different.
Most law enforcement agencies in the United States are smaller and rural, including rural counties served by a sheriff, county or state police, or smaller town police. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there are 17,985 local and state law enforcement agencies in the United States and 86 percent of those serve populations up to 50,000 people. A very high percentage of that 86 percent have between one and 24 officers serving communities of 25,000 and fewer.
Police officers and sheriff's deputies are among the most dedicated and selfless people you can know. They want to keep people safe and help improve the quality of life for the citizens they serve. They are literally on the front lines and are first responders to any emergency. We saw recently in Boston and Moore, Okla. how police operate in an emergency and how they are deeply affected by the hurt and injury of those to whom they respond. Read about: why law enforcement agencies need NAMI more than ever and how communities and NAMI affiliates can work with them.

NAMI Has 'Got You Covered!
By Jessica Hart, NAMI Policy and Legal Affairs Assistant, and Sita Diehl, Director of State Policy and Advocacy
Today it takes an average of eight to 10 years after symptoms of mental illness emerge to get an accurate diagnosis, much less treatment. Health insurance is costly, hard to get, hard to keep and often does not cover needed care. The future looks brighter because new health insurance options are coming this fall to help over 11 million uninsured Americans with mental health conditions get the care they need. The new insurance comes as a result of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), passed by Congress and signed into law by the president in 2010. The purpose of the ACA is to make sure that all Americans have access to affordable health insurance. NAMI's new Got You Covered website will feature a wealth of information to help you navigate the system. On the site, you will find: - Answers to frequently asked questions, such as:
- With implementation of the health reform law, what options will be available to me for new, additional or expanded mental health care in insurance?
- What does Medicaid expansion mean to me in my state?
- What health insurance benefits must plans provide as part of the health reform law?
- Fact sheets about the new health law and how its implementation affects people with mental illness and their families.
- The Mental Health Parity Tool Kit, which was developed to assist people with mental illness and their families when it comes to mental health parity. For people who think their rights have been violated the toolkit shows how to respond.
- The Policy Makers Tool Kit, which includes fact sheets that can be used by mental health advocates to educate legislators and other decision-makers on why strengthening mental health care is critical to the health of our nation.

NAMI Introduces Early Psychosis and Recovery Podcast Series
New Resource
NAMI is continuing to build on its work to help families and young adults who may be experiencing the onset of symptoms of psychosis to add to the extensive Psychosis website resources. In 2011, NAMI published the results of First Episode: Psychosis, an extensive survey of people living with psychosis and their families looking back at the onset of symptoms, sharing what they needed to know as they reflected on their experience. After a full literature review of both creative and traditional treatments and services, and a new brochure that attends to this issue, NAMI has created Early Psychosis and Recovery, a podcast series on the topic to bring an audio resource to people who may be facing this challenge. The podcast series can be found at NAMI.org and is also available to download from iTunes for free. This inaugural podcast is the first in a series of five that will be produced and available beginning now and continuing through the end of the year.

Regulating Glutamate May Help Early Detection of Schizophrenia, Study Finds
By Hisaho Blair, NAMI Intern
In a recent study conducted at Columbia University Medical Center and published in the journal Neuron, researchers followed a group of 25 young people who were at risk for schizophrenia to see what happens to their brains as they develop the disorder. They also used a mouse model to look at the effects of glutamate on the brain during acute psychosis. Their findings suggest that an excess level of the brain neurotransmitter glutamate may be what triggers the transition to psychosis. According to senior author Scott Small, M.D., previous research has shown that in schizophrenia and related disorders, the two prominent changes that occur in patient's brain are hypermetabolism (abnormally increased activity) and atrophy (a decrease in size) of the hippocampus. However, the relation between the two changes had not been studied. Schizophrenia is a progressive disease characterized by a gradual onset, beginning with a prodromal stage then progressing to psychotic symptoms. Previous studies (Fusar-Poli et al., 2012) have shown that approximately 30 percent of patients with prodromal symptoms progress to psychosis. Read more about the results Back to Top

CDC: One in Five Kids Lives with a Mental Health Issue
By Stephanie Dinkmeyer, NAMI Communications Intern
Millions of American children are living with mental disorders. Reports and studies have shown that it's nearly one in five. But a newly published six-year study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shed some light on the specifics behind the numbers.
Between 2005 and 2011, the CDC collected data from studies performed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and others, concerning mental disorder diagnoses in children aged 3 to 17. The report also revealed a decrease in substance use disorders in children aged 12 to 17 from 2002 to 2011.
The study covers a breadth of disorders, including but not limited to ADHD, depression, anxiety, substance use disorders and Tourette's syndrome. ADHD was the most common disorder to affect the children studied, at 6.8 percent. Tourette's syndrome was the least common, at less than 0.5 percent. Volunteer Opportunities
Do you want to help?
NAMIDKK would love to be doing more but there is just not enough time in our days to do everything we think of. If you have an hour or more to help us out we would be glad to hear from you. For some things you do not even need to come into our office to help.
Your help as volunteers would increase our ability to help improve the quality of life for individuals with mental illness and their families. We need: a grant writer, a publicity coordinator, librarian, speakers bureau volunteers, help line call takers, dinner/raffle help, more people for our educations programs, someone to join NAMI National's Stigma Buster Alert program, people to help update resource information, as well as newsletter submissions.

Educational ProgramsHelping schools reach out to children with mental illness
 |
ENDING THE SILENCE: Ending the Silence is a high school health class presentation, typically presented during the mental health portion of the curriculum. This interactive program teaches the basic signs and symptoms of mental illnesses in teenagers, presents personal stories to reduce stigma, and provides many resource materials for students.
PARENTS AND TEACHERS AS ALLIES: Parents and Teachers as allies was created to help families and school professionals identify the key warning signs of early-onset mental illnesses in children and adolescents in our schools. The program is intended to provide an educational tool for advancing mutual understanding and communication between families and school professionals. This program is designed for two-hour teacher in-services, parent PTA sponsored evenings, and mental health professional classes.
RED FLAGS:Red Flags is a depression awareness program for middle school students. It is generally taught in health classes and takes 3-5 class periods. The teacher can choose between 2 DVD's: "Claire's Story," or "Thick'n Thin," a more recent story of teenage depression. Two additional DVD's go with the program, as well as suggested class activites, information on mental illness and discussion topics. Back to Top

Employer Matching Donations How do I secure a matching gift for my donation to NAMI-DKK? Contact your Human Resources Department to find out if your company has a Matching Gift Program. If they have a matching gift program, your company likely uses one of two ways to secure your additional matching gift to NAMI-DKK: (Most common) Obtain your company's matching gift form, fill out the "Donor" section, and mail it to NAMI-DKK when you send your donation. NAMI-DKK will complete the "Charity" section of the form, and mail it back to your company. This will confirm that we received your gift and request their matching gift. (Less common) Make your donation to NAMI-DKK through the mail or phone. Upon receipt of your gift, NAMI-DKK will send a letter acknowledging your contribution. Bring this letter to your Matching Gift program coordinator who will distribute your company's matching gift to NAMI-DKK. Why should I give a matching gift to NAMI-DKK? Matching gift programs allow you to allocate your company's charitable dollars to the cause nearest and dearest to you heart, greatly increasing your donation's value to NAMI-DKK. What's more, NAMI-DKK considers your corporation's matching gift as part of your total contribution. Therefore, your $50 gift can become a $100 or $150 gift to NAMI-DKK. So please -- go ahead and make a donation to NAMI-DKK today!
