Keeping Young Children Safe during the Holidays
by Roberta Humphries, Executive Director
The holidays are an exciting time for children and their families but it can also be a time of extreme stress. Change in schedules, inclement weather, undue expectations, financial worries, crowded stores, hiring babysitters to attend holiday functions can all lead parents and children to lose patience with each other. It is important for parents to develop strategies so that the holidays remain safe for their children. Read more

November Story Time
By Faith Boehmer, Prevention/Volunteer Coordinator
In November, the Child Advocacy Center (CAC), together with the Cumberland County Community Coalition for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse provided story time to 1,155children in Cumberland County at 42 different child development centers. The CAC and Coalition chose to focus on educating preschool children about appropriate and inappropriate touching through story time activities during the 19 Days of Prevention (Nov 1-19) using the book, Some Parts are Not for Sharing, written by Julie Federico, and the workbook Your Body Belongs to You. A grant from SREMC Community Assistance Fund allowed the CAC to provide each child that attended story time either the book or workbook. These books help children learn about personal boundaries and appropriate touching in a very non-threatening way. During the previous fiscal year, 616 child victims of abuse were served by the CAC. Of those, 222 were less than seven years old. A critical step in preventing child sexual abuse is to empower children to say "no" to unwanted touches and to teach them that they can approach a trusted adult with questions or concerns without fear of getting "in trouble".

Now is the time to Join Hands with the Child Advocacy Center
by Roberta Humphries, Executive Director
"Susie" is a 4-year-old girl, who was brought to the CAC for a forensic interview by law enforcement after being sexually abused by multiple family members. She also received a specialized medical exam at Southern Regional Area Health Education Center. Based on the interview and the evidence gathered, she and her two brothers were removed from the home and placed into a loving and caring foster home by Cumberland County DSS. She attends counseling at the Child Advocacy Center through our partnership with Cape Fear Valley Behavioral Health and her foster mother reports that she is recovering well. Our Victim Family Advocate works with the foster mother to ensure that she and the children have access to needed resources to help with Susie's recovery.
This is just one example how the multi-disciplinary approach to handling child abuse cases... Read more

The Inaugural Pinwheel Masquerade Ball to Unmask Child Abuse was held on Saturday November 1 at the Metropolitan Room. More than 250 guests enjoyed a live and silent auction, music by Five Star Entertainment, a dance demo by Chip and Merle Modlin, a mask contest and wonderful food and drink provided by local restaurants and caterers. The photo booth was a fun opportunity for guests to create lasting memories of photos with their beautiful and creative masks. It takes months of planning and long hours to have a truly successful special event fundraiser and this year's Pinwheel Masquerade Ball Committee worked very hard to ensure a successful year for this inaugural event. Thanks to our wonderful sponsors and attendees the net proceeds exceeded $30,000. Plans for next year's event are currently underway and if anyone is interested in being a sponsor or serving on the planning committee please contact the CAC at (910) 486-9700.

And a special thank you to all our individual donors and supports who help us provide the very best services to the child victims of abuse in our community.
