Celebrating 20 Years of Healing and Hope
by Roberta Humphries, Executive Director
2013 is a very special year for the Child Advocacy Center. It marks 20 years of service to child victims of abuse and their families in Cumberland County. It also brings to reality the dream of owning our own facility. The Child Advocacy Center was able to move into our new facility on February 4, 2013, located at 222 Rowan Street, thanks to the diligence of our Board of Directors in locating a suitable facility and the generosity of a donor who provided the necessary down payment to make the dream of ownership a reality. This is such an amazing tribute to our supporters and founders Read more... |

Welcome New Therapy Dogs
In August 2010, the CAC launched a new program using therapy dogs to meet and greet children and their families when they come to the CAC for interviews related to child abuse. Since that time, therapy dogs have become a fixture at the CAC, bringing stress relief to not only the child and family but also to the staff and multi-disciplinary team members as well. Being with a therapy dog can help calm a child and reduce the child's level of anxiety. Being greeted by a therapy dog is not only beneficial for the child, but also helpful for the entire family. Several breeds of dogs are used as therapy dogs and all must go through training and certification. The therapy dogs' handlers are volunteers who bring the dogs to the CAC.
Last year we lost two of our beloved therapy dogs, Nena, a white standard poodle and Abbey, a yellow lab. They were both loyal volunteers and we mourned their passing. Their handlers continue to volunteer with us with new therapy dogs that have been certified. Diane Wood now has Tigger, a blue 7-year-old standard poodle that was raised from a pup by Diane. This is Tigger's first year as a certified therapy dog, and he loves visiting new people but is particularly attracted to children. His calm patient manner is a source of contentment for those he meets. Besides his volunteer work at the CAC, Tigger visits Raleigh Road Elementary School where the children read to him. He also visits patients at the VA hospital. Abbey's owner, Flavia Thompson, has a new therapy dog named Casey, also a yellow lab. Casey is 16 months old and was certified in October 2012. Besides the CAC, Casey volunteers at the NC Veterans Home, Cedar Creek Assisted Living and CFVHS.
Two new dogs and handlers to our program are Kim Vaughn and her dog, Talon, and Justin Chase and his dog, Sophia. Kim's mother-in-law was a therapy dog handler and to honor her memory Kim decided to get her dog certified and volunteer as a therapy dog handler as well. Justin rescued Sophia, and despite her traumatic early years she is very well socialized and is an extremely good therapy dog. The children love her calm demeanor.
We are very excited to have these four dogs join our therapy dog program along with Boogey, Zac, Ripley and Hank. |
