Houmas House Plantation and Gardens

Beyond the Gardens
As Seen by Princess Maggie

It's so easy to be overwhelmed by the gardens surrounding Houmas House.  They are bright, colorful and ever-changing.  But if you look beyond the lily ponds and the massive Live Oak trees you will see the majestic estate that has weathered over two centuries of wars, storms, floods, and at times neglect. The story of survival and strength of  this home is shared with guests daily by knowledgeable and passionate guides who have studied its history and love to tell its story.   The mansion has been restored to the glory days when it was often called "The Sugar Palace".  When you buy a ticket to tour this home, you get so much more than a house tour.  You are brought back to an era we have only seen depicted in movies.  Each room is complete with period furnishings, some original to the home.  You will learn about the past owners and how they grew a modest three-room hut to the grand estate it is today. And you'll see what these pioneers used in the 1830's which eventually became modern day appliances like microwaves, coffee pots and wine pourers.
Come explore all that Houmas House has to offer.  Be part of its history and marvel in the grandeur of its architecture, its story and its representation of the American South.

Much Love,
Princess Maggie
Dining at Houmas House

If it's been a while since you dined at Houmas House, make plans to visit again.  With each season our menus change and are reflective of what grows in our gardens and is available at local farmers markets.
The Carriage House Restaurant is perfect for both tourists and locals looking for an easy night out. Serving dinner every night in the elegant Wedgewood blue room, one can enjoy buttery scallops,  fresh fish atop grits, or succulent shrimp Aubergine just to name a few.
Latil's Landing still remains the area's favorite restaurant to celebrate special occasions. Serving dinner Wednesday- Saturday, guest dine in the original manor house from 1774 overlooking the lighted Hampton fountain and courtyard. The new tasting menu offers a wide variety of all Louisiana cuisine.
And for the day-trippers, Cafe Burnside now offers a large buffet in addition to its a la carte menu. Dining for lunch has never been easier.
