Houmas House Announces  the Arrival of  Our New Book -
Louisiana's  Sugar Palace

A magnificent pictorial and history of the enchanting mansion, gardens, and buildings of Louisiana's Sugar Palace, Houmas House Plantation and Gardens. Artist, author and photographer Jim Blanchard's compilation of recent and historic photography, archival research, and treasures from the Houmas Collections unfold in his tribute to the families of the great sugar barons Daniel Clark, Wade Hampton, John Burnside, and William Porcher Miles.

The historic tribute also included early explorers and settlers of the vast Louisiana Territory, and their encounters with the Houmas Indians during expeditions prior to the Louisiana Purchase.

Fun in the Gardens

As Seen by Queen Grace

Each season I like to dress to match my surroundings and my social calendar.  This month is no exception with my green hats, collar and whatever else I decide to accessorize with.
St. Patrick's Day is just around the corner and once again, I found the leprechaun hiding in the Houmas House gardens.  Maybe his pot of gold is tucked away deep in the azaleas.
Regardless, I'll watch the little imp as I enjoy this early Spring weather and dress to impress all of my visitors.

Much Love,
Queen Grace

Secrets from The Carriage House Restaurant

Chef Jeremy Langlois "Chopped Salad"

Serves 4

1 lb jumbo lump crabmeat

1 cup mayonnaise

1/2 cup champagne vinegar

Juice of one lime

1/2 cup fresh tarragon, chopped

1/2 cup diced turnips

1/2 cup sliced pickled ginger

1/2 cup minced ice cream cones

4 handfuls baby arugula

1 cup olive oil

salt and pepper to taste

For Crab

In a blender, add mayonnaise, champagne vinegar, lime juice, and tarragon. Blend all ingredients until smooth, and season to taste with salt and pepper. In a mixing bowl, add jumbo lump crab, and gently fold in the dressing from the blender, being carful not to break the lumps of crab. Use only enough of the dressing to lightly coat the crab. Set aside.

For Turnips

In a small pot, bring water to a rolling boil. Cook turnips for 5 minutes or until a fork can pass through easily. Remove turnips, and place in a bowl of ice water to chill. Remove from water and set aside.

For Arugula

Just before you are ready to build the salad, add arugula to a mixing bowl. Add olive oil, and salt and pepper to taste. Toss ingredients gently. Set aside.

To Assemble the Salad

Place a 3 inch ring-mold on the center of each plate. Add 1/4 of the minced ice-cream to the bottom of the ring mold, spreading around evenly. Next, add the 1/4 of of the cooked turnips, layering on top of the ice cream cones. Next add 1/4 of the crab mixture. Using the back of a spoon, push the top of the crab mixture firmly to pack all of the ingredients in the ring mold tightly. Gently pull the ring mold off, so the everything stands in a cylinder. Carefully top the crab mixture with a handful of arugula salad. Garnish the salad with a few slices of pickled ginger. Serve.

50 Shades of  Spring

A true plantation destination, Houmas House gives visitors many reasons to visit. From the food enthusiast to the horticulturist to the history buff, one can spend a couple days at The Sugar Palace and experience something new inside and out.

With the Spring season upon us, the most sought out attraction are gardens and Houmas House is no exception. Visitors can stroll through 38 acres of breathtaking, lush gardens, which are replanted throughout the year to reflect the season. Walking paths and sitting nooks invite visitors to take their time meandering through the acres of seasonal foliage, enjoying the colors, scents and designs of these plants. Master Gardener, Craig Black, has overseen the gardens for over 40 years. An artist by trade, he approaches each new season as though it is a blank canvas. The color renewal process is done twice a year, in April and November, which involves replanting over 40,000 new plants. Both Spring and Winter bring vibrant colors and varying textures to each section of the grounds. Water features such as lily ponds and waterfalls create a peaceful feeling and provide a beautiful display of our Amazon lily pads and exotic Lotus. Wisteria-wrapped arbors provide many picturesque scenes and shady spots to enjoy a mint julep. The most impressive feature of the gardens are the massive moss-draped Live Oak trees that form a cathedral alley to the front of the imposing Greek revival mansion. Viewing the gardens alone could be a full day.
